Dyer County Court Clerk Minutes

Dated June 3, 1850


Be it Remembered that a County Court was begun and held for the County of Dyer State of Tennessee at the Court House in the Town of Dyersburg on the First Monday in June it being the third day of said month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty & in the 74th year of American Independence.

Present and holding said Court the Worshipfull THOMAS J. CONNELL Esquire Chairman of said Court, JOSEPH N. PIERCE, HENRY WYNNE, SAMUEL McDAVID, JOHN WYNNE & A. B. STALCUP Justices WILLIAM A. DAWSON Sheriff of said County and JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of said Court when the following proceeded were had towit:

This day JOSEPH MICHELL produced here in open Court a commission from his Excellency WILLIAM TROUSDALE, Governor of Tennessee, appointing him a Justice of the Peace of this court...

Whereas ISAAC SAWYER Administrator of the Estate of WILLIS FERRELL deceased, has suggested the insolvency of his intestated Estate in writing under Oath before the Clerk of this Court...

Whereas ISAAC SAWYER Administrator of the Estate of WILLIAM B. WOMMACK, deceased, has suggested the insolvency of his intestated Estate in writing under Oath before the Clerk of this Court...

Issued 3rd June 1850

Ordered by the Court that MICHAEL BARLOW, CALEB SMITH, R. A. H. McCORKLE, H. P. STRAWN, and ALFRED TUCKER be and they are hereby appointed a Jury of Review, to view & mark out an alteration in the Road leading from the Turnpike to Dyersburg...

Ordered by the Court that GEORGE & WILLIAM CLEMENS be allowed & Required to work on the Trenton Road under D. E. PARKER overseer and that they be released from all other Roads.

This day THOMAS YANCY who was convicted of being the father of a Bastard Child Begotten on the Body of ALMIRA FREEMAN a Single woman of this County came into open court here together with WILLIAM M. YANCY his Security and Entered into Bond for the payment of Ninety Dollars to be paid in three annual payments Towit forty dollars for the first Thirty dollars for the second & Twenty dollars for the third year.

Ordered by the court that SAMUEL WALKER be appointed overseer of that part of the Trenton Road of which G. R. MULHEREN was formerly overseer Resigned...

Issued 3rd June 1850

Ordered by the Court that ROBERT PEERY be appointed overseer of that part of the Road leading from Dyersburg to Fields Landing... and that he have the following hands JOHN PEERY, KING McVAY, A. McCLARNEY, HENRY BOON, WILLIAM BOON, JOHN R. LUSTER, WILLIAM S. WRIGHT, JOHN ASHLAND, ROBERT WILKINS, E. A. FERGUSONs hands and all other hands...

This day ELIJAH FULLER & others, a Jury of view, to view out a new Road... to leave the Dyersburg Road at THOMAS PAINs... to DENT FERRELLs heirs & JAMES GREENS as marked to A. DUKEYs corner, thence with his line to D. BARDs Corner...

Ordered by the Court that ANDERSON DUKEY be appointed overseer of that part of a road Reviewed & Marked out by ELIJAH FULLER & others...

On a Motion and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court here that WILLIAM T. BRETTE has departed this life intestate it is therefore Ordered by the Court that JOSEPH BRETTE be appointed administrator of... the estate... with E. B. CURTIS & JOHN WYNNE his securities...

This day GEORGE FAUSE & WILLIAM FAUSE, came into open court here and Entered into Bond in the penal sum of Five Hundred dollars Conditioned that a Black man of Color, he being free named ZECHAL HENDERSON, will demean himself well and will not become a County charge &c.

This day ISAAC SAWYER Administrator of all and singular the goods & Chattles Rights & credits of WILLIAM B. WOMACK deceased made return of an Inventory & account of sale of said estate...

This day a settlement, made by ALBERT G. FERGUSON Executor of the last will and Testament, of HERRON BREWER deceased, with JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of this court, was produced in open court & in all things confirmed & ordered of Record.

This day a Settlement made by THOMAS J. CONNELL Guardian of the minor heirs of WILLIAM NASH deceased, with JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of this court was produced in open court & in all things confirmed & ordered of Record.

Ordered by the Court that JNO. WYNNE, J. A. PHILLIPS & STEPHEN KING be appointed Commissioners to lay off & set apart a years provisions for the Widow & Children of WM. T. BRETTE deceased & report to next Term of this Court.

This day DAVID INGRAM, produced here in open court the scalp of a Wolf under four months old & proved to the satisfaction of the court that the same was killed in Dyer County...

Ordered by the court that R. J. LEACH be appointed overseer of that part of the Trenton Road commencing at the Bridge at Frost old Mill... and have the following hands JOSHUA SAWYER, JAMES WALKER & hands, JERRY PIERCEs Sons & hands, ISAAC SAWYERs hands, DAVID MICHALS & WILLIS SAWYER...
