Dyer County Court Clerk Minutes

Dated July 2, 1849


Be it Remembered that a county court was begun and held for the County of Dyer State of Tennessee at the Court House in the Town of Dyersburg on the first Monday in July it being the second day of said month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred & forty Nine & in the Seventy third year of the Independence of the United States of America.

Present and holding said Court the Worshipful THOMAS J. CONNELL Esq. Chairman, SAMUEL McDAVID and ALEXANDER B. STALLCUP Esquires, quorum Justices, and CHRISTIAN S. COBB, SILAS FERRELL, SAMUEL G. GILLESPIE, WILLIAM MILLER, JAHIEL M. McCORKLE, HENRY P. STRAWN, JOSEPH N. PIERCE, BENJAMIN W. PERRY, H. N. JACKSON, ASA GRIFFIN, HENRY WYNNE and THOMAS NASH Esquires Justices of this Court; Zaccheus B. PHILLIPS Sheriff of said County and JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of said Court; when & where the following proceedings were had, towit:

This day WILLIAM L. MEDARS obtained Leave to Record his stock mark which is a swollow fork & underbit in each ear.

Ordered by the Court that MICHAEL O. B. GAULDEN's hands be taken from the Frost's Mill Road and hereafter work on that part of the Dresden Road of which ELIAS P. LIGHT is overseer.

This day ALBERT G. FERGUSON came into open court and waived his right to the administration of the Estate of WILLIAM H. EARLE Deceased, in favor of D. J. WILLIAMSON, who was thereupon appointed said administrator, whereupon the said D. J. WILLIAMSON came into Court together with ALBERT G. FERGUSON his Security and entered into and acknowledged Bond...

This day an Election was held for a Revenue Commissioner to fill the vacancy accosioned by the removal of M. R. HILL; a majority of all the Justices of this Court being present, Dr. ABNER BENTON was elected.

Ordered by the court that HENDERSON CLARK furnish WILLIAM HERRON a Blind Pauper of this county with provisions necessary for his sustenence, in the manner that to him shall seem best, to the amount of Eighteen Dollars worth between this time and the first of January next; and that amount shall be allowed him at the January Term of this court.

This day JOHN WYNNE Esq., Trustee of this County, came into open Court together with ELIAS P. LIGHT his security and entered into and acknowledged Bond for the faithful collection and distribution of the Common School moneys apportioned to this county, which Bond is in the words and figures following...

Whereas hertofore ISAAC SAMPSON contracted with this the county court of Dyer County, to furnish a Town lot in the Town of Dyersburg upon the public square & to build & complete a county court clerks office upon said lot for the sum of six hundred and fifty dollars payable in the County tax on Reported land, but in making up the records of said contract the word fifty was left out...

Upon the matter of the application of WILLIAM NASH for a Pension &c Evidence was ad----? to the satisfaction of the court here, that WILLIAM NASH decd was a pentioner of the United States at the rate of $20. per annum, under the act of the 7th June 1832 that he resided in the county of Dyer and State of Tennessee & that he died in said county of Dyer in September 34?, and that he left one child who is now living & whose name is THOMAS NASH. It is therefore ordered by the court, that the same be certified accordingly to the pension office by the clerk of this court.
