Be it Remembered that a County Court was begun and held for the County of Dyer State of Tennessee, on the first Monday in January it being the sixth day of said month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred & fifty one & in the 75th year of American Independence.

Present and holding said Court the Worshipful THOMAS J. CONNELL Esquire Chairman, SAMUEL McDAVID, A. B. STALCUP, JOHN B. PITTS, SAMUEL G. GILLESPIE, CHRISTIAN S. COBB, THOMAS F. FIELDS, HENRY WYNNE, HENRY P. STRAWN, THOMAS NASH, WILLIAM MILLER, BENJAMIN W. PERRY, SILAS FERRELL, A. C. PIERCE & JOSEPH N. PIERCE Esquires Justices of said Court WILLIAM A. DAVIDSON Sheriff of said County & JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of said Court when the following proceedings were had, towit:


Ordered by the Court that THOMAS J. CONNELL, Esqr. be authorised to furnish HERREN? a Blind Pauper of this County provisions? &c for the year 1851 to the amt of forty Dollars.

HENDERSON Resigned, came into open court here together with WILLIAM S. SKIPWITH and WILLIAM J. FEATHERSTON his securities...


This day an account of One hundred Eight Nine Dollars & 50 Cents in favour of MRS. ELIZABETH SMITH against the Estate of BENJAMIN SMITH deceased was produced here in open court and ordered to be paid by the administrator of said Estate.


This day, JESSE HALL Et al, who were appointed a Jury of view at the October Term of this Court 1850, to Renew and mark out an alteration in the New Road of which STEPHEN CHITWOOD was overseer Returned here into open Court their Report favoring such alteration.

Petition for division of Slaves and Land

Be it Remembered that on this 6th day of January AD 1851, Came on this Cause to be heard upon Petition, and proof when it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the Petitioners are the joint owners of the following Negroes, Slaves for life towit.- ROSE, AGGY, HENRY, WHITMAN, JACK, LEONA, MARTHA, MARIA, MARY, COMFORT, NED and THOMAS and it farther appearing that the Petitioners are also the owners of as tenants in Common of the following tract of land in Dyer County towit- One tract of 29 acres entered in the names of GILL & SMITH... [description of land follows]... One other tract of 152 1/2 Acres Granted by the State of Tennessee to ANDREW KING, by Grant No. 17308... [description of land follows]... bounded by JAMES CLARK, GILL & SMITH and PETER R. BEVERLY... One other tract of 640 acres Entered in the name of PETER R. BEVERLEY by Entery No 175... [description of land follows]... bounded by H. TOOMES, JAMES W. CLARK and THOMAS CRUTCHENS... And it further appearing to the Court that the petitioners are entitled to Equal shares of said Land and Slaves...

Be it remembered that on this 6th day of January AD 1851, came on this cause for final hearing... at the Last October term of this Court to make division of the Slaves mentioned in the Petition...

We the undersigned Commissioners appointed by the Court for the purpose of dividing the Negroes between A. G. SMITH & EDWARD M. SMITH after first having been duly sworn have proceeded to discharge that duty in the following manner Towit to No 1 E. M. SMITH, DENNIS a negro man Valued at $825.00, SARAH & child JUDIEANN, at $500.00, CHANEY at $150.00, SAM a negro boy at $350.00, MARTHA a Negro Girl valued at $250.00, and MAJOR a negro boy at $225.00 and MINERVIA a Girl worth $450.00

To N2, A. G. SMITH, DICK a negro man valued at $700.00, MARGARET & 2 Children, HENRY CLAY & STEPHEN Valued at $950.00, MARIA and LUCINDA at $350.00, ISAAC a Negro boy at $550.00, BOB and AGNESS Two old negroes, Considered to be worth nothing. No 1 pays to No 2 fifty dollars. BOB was given to No 2 and AGNESS to No 1, all of which is respectfully submitted for your favorable Consideration this 28th December 1850.

Exparte Petition for sale of Slaves for payment of debts

...at its last October Term appointing the undersigned Commissioners to sell the slaves belonging to the estate of GEORGE C. BOOTH deceased late of said County... when STEPHEN CHITWOOD became the purchaser of the slave CHARITY a woman aged about 18 years, at and for the sum of $770.00. WILLIAM DEARMORE became the purchaser of the slaves CHANEY a woman aged about 30 years and her two children, AMANDA a girl aged about 3 years and LEWIS a boy aged one year (in a lot) at and for the sum of $970.00. And AENAES? M. BARNET became the purchaser of the slave HENRY a boy aged about eleven years at and for the sum of $560.00 making an aggregate of $2300...

It is therefore ordered, adjudged and decreed by the Court that all the right, title, claim and interest of JOHN T. FIELDS, ANN ELIZA FIELDS (his wife), FRANZONIA C. BOOTH and JOHN M. ALSOBROOKS in, to and over the said slave[s]... and the legal title of the same vested in the said STEPHEN CHITWOOD...[and] WILLIAM DEARMORE...

On a motion to allow WILLIAM A. DAWSON the sum of Eleven dollars 75 cents amt of his act for Sundry Services in the year 1850...


This day E. M. TURNAGE who had been Charged with Bastardy on the Body of MARY SPENCE came into open court here together with WILLIAM F. FIELDS his security & Entered into and acknowledged Bond in the penal sum of one Hundred & Eighty dollars Conditioned to pay said MARY SPENCE for the support of her said Bastard Child forty dollars for the first thirty dollars for the second & Twenty dollars for the third year, whereupon said TURNAGE was discharged from his recognizance?.

Ordered by the Court that ROBERT CROW be appointed overseer of that part of the Troy Road between the 8 mile tree, and where the old Lake Road intersects it in place of ALFRED JONES former overseer Resigned...


This day Z. B. PHILIPS collector of the public taxes of Dyer County for the year 1850 Returned, here into open court...

This day ISAAC BURNELL produced here in open court the scalp of a wolf over four months old & proved to the satisfaction of the court here that he killed the same in Dyer County...


This day GEORGE WILBURN was chosen and appointed Guardian of THOMAS J. HALLIBURTON and MARTHA HALLIBURTON, minor heirs of T. W. HALLIBURTON deceased... with WILLIAM A. DAWSON his security... acknowledged bond in the penal sum of Three Hundred dollars...


This day the application of FRANCIS G. SAMPSON praying the Court to Grant him a certificate of age and character preparatory to obtaining a License to practice as an attorney at Law; It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that said SAMPSON is fully Twenty One years of age (he having Resided more? than that S---th of time in this County) that he is of good Reputation, of Steady and temperate habits, and that his moral character is in every point of view, unexceptionable; It is therefore ordered by the Court That the Clerk of this Court prepare? for his a Certificate accordingly.


Ordered that the Court adjourn till Court in Course.
