Dyer County Court Clerk Minutes Dated January 1, 1849 |

Be it Remembered that a county court was begun and held for the County of Dyer State of Tennessee at the Court House in the Town of Dyersburg on the first Monday in January it being the first day of said month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred & forty Nine & in the 73rd year of American Independence. Present and holding said Court the Worshipfull THOMAS J. CONNELL Esqr, Chairman of said Court, SAMUEL McDAVID, A. B. STALCUP, WILLIAM MILLER, JOHN WYNNE, JOSEPH F. PETTYJOHN, HENRY P. STRAWN, SAMUEL WALKER, JEHEEL M. McCORKLE, JOSEPH N. PIERCE, JOHN F. SINCLAIR, CHRISTIAN C. COBB, HENRY WYNNE, ISAEU SAWYERS, SAMUEL G. GILLESPIE, Esquires Justices of said court Z. B. PHILLIPS Sheriff of said county and JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of said court when the following proceedings was had Towit
Issued 3rd Jan 1849 On a Motion to allow THOMAS J. CONNELL Esqr Eighteen Dollars for his services as a quorum Justice for the year 1848 one third of all the Justices of this court being present, those voting for said allowance were Esquires McDAVID, STALLCUP, MILLER, WYNNE, STRAWN WALKER, McCORKLE and COBB: so said allowance was made and ordered to be paid out of any county money in Trustee's hands not otherwise appropriated.
Issued 3rd Jan 1849 On a Motion to allow SAMUEL McDAVID Esq. Eighteen Dollars for his services as a quorum Justice for the year 1848 one third of all the Justices of this court being present...

This day an Election was held by this court for three quorum Justices when THOMAS J. CONNELL, SAMUEL McDAVID and ALEXANDER B. STALCUP were declared duly Elected for the ensuing year, whereupon THOMAS J. CONNELL Esqr. was duly Elected Chairman & Presiding Justice of said court.
Issued 4th Jan 1849 Ordered by the court that ARCHABALD FETHERSTON be & he is hereby appointed overseer of that part of the Trenton Road... that that he have in addition to the hands he already has allotted him the sons & hands of the widow NEWSOM PIERCE and all other hands in the same bounds...
Issued 4th Jan 1849 Ordered by the court that NATHL BENTON be appointed overseer of that part of the Meehell Road commencing at Dyersburg... and that he have the following hands Towit JAMES FIELDS hands, JOHN D. Ordered by the court that HANNAH W. NOLEN be allowed the Sum of forty Dollars for providing for her Ediot son for the year 1849.
Ordered by the court that THOMAS J. CONNELL be allowed forty Dollars for the use & Benefit of the widow HENSON & her fitty fud child for the year 1849.
Ordered by the court that S. G. GILLESPIE Esqr. furnish WM. HARRIS a Blind Pauper of this county provisions for a support, until April next & Render his account to the court for payment.
Ordered by the court that B. W. PERRY furnish READING CAMPBELL a Pauper of this county provissions until the April Term of this court & furnish account for payment &c.
Ordered by the court that RICHARD HEATH have the Children of RICHARD ROBERSON in court here at the next February Term thereof to be disposed of as the court may direct.
Ordered by the Court that WILLIAM NASH be allowed fifteen dollars for taking care of a Pauper child of KING McVAYS for the year 1849.

A majority of all the Justices of this court being present and concurring therein the following Taxes were Levied for the year 1849 Towit County Tax on Each $100 worth of Taxable property 5 cents
This day Messers M. R. HILL & A. G. FERGUSON produced in court here a settlement made with JOHN WYNNE Trustee of this county, which was Received by the court & ordered of Record.
This day JEHEEL M. McCORKLE a Justice of this court came into court together with JAMES H. DOYLE & Z. B. PHILLIPS his securities & entered into and acknowledged Bon in the penal sum of five Hundred dollars conditioned & payable as the Law directs, under an act of the General assembly giving Justices of the peace Jurisdiction over small offences.

HALE (HALL?) former Clerk of the Circuit Court to following Bills of Cost Towit, fourteen Dollars 75 cts in the case of the State vs BRYANT FITZHUGH Twenty one Dollars 25 cents in the case of the State vs JOHN LUNSFORD Same vs B.
