Dyer County Court Clerk Minutes

Dated February 4, 1850


Be it Remembered that a County Court was begun and held at the Court House in Dyersburg for the County of Dyer, State of Tennessee, on the first Monday (it being the fourth day) of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and fifty & in the 74th year of the Independence of the United States of America.

Present and holding said Court the Worshipful THOMAS J. CONNELL Esquire Chairman, SAMUEL McDAVID and ALEXANDER B. STALLCUP Esquires quorum, and JOSEPH N. PIERCE, ISAAC SAWYER, Esquires Justices of this Court; Zaccheus B. PHILLIPS Sheriff of Dyer County AND JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk of this Court, when, after proclamation in the usual manner, the following proceedings were had, towit:

Issued 4th Feby 1850

This day ISAAC SAWYER was appointed Administrator of the Estate of WILLIS FERRELL deceased, whereupon came the said ISAAC SAWYER into court here together with THOMAS J. CONNELL his security and entered into and acknowledged Bond...

Issued 4th Feby 1850

This day JEREMIAH PIERCE, JAMES WALKER and KENNON WALKER were appointed Commissioners to Lay off and set apart one years provisions for the Widow and Children of WILLIS FERRELL deceased & that they being first duly sworn report to the next Term of this Court.

Issued 4th Feby 1850

This day JAMES H. KING was appointed Administrator of the Estate of REUBEN T. HOUSE deceased. Whereupon came the said JAMES H. KING into court here together with WILLIAM S. STARITT his security and entered into and acknowledged Bond...

Issued 4th Feby 1850

Ordered by the Court that GREEN FREEMAN, ASBURY FREEMAN and GEORGE PERKINS be appointed Commissioners to lay off and set apart a year's provisions for the Children of REUBEN T. HOUSE deceased...

This day JAMES H. DOYLE Clerk appointed Special Administrator of JOHN LIGHTFOOT deceased. Whereupon came the said J. H. DOYLE into court here together with HENRY L. FOWLKES his security and entered into and acknowledged Bond...

Ordered by the Court that FERDINAND L. SAUNDERS, HENRY WYNNE and ELIAS P. LIGHT be appointed a Jury of view to lay off an alteration in the Dresden Road to commence at the South East corner of HENRY FOWLKES...

Ordered by the Court that ALBERT G. FERGUSON have Leave to change the road from the west end of JOHN RADFORD's Lane and to run on the west side of the Branch to the west end of his own lane provided that he make said alteration himself...

This day GREEN FREEMAN came into open Court here and procured to be established and make Public his Ferry across the Obion River. Whereupon came the said GREEN FREEMAN together with HENDERSON CLARK his security came into open Court and entered into Bond in the penal sum of Two thousand Dollars conditioned and payable as the law directs. Whereupon it is allowed and ordered by the Court that he be entitled to and receive the following rates, towit:
For a 5 or 6 horse Wagon, at the 1st 75 ct at the 2nd 1.50 & at the 3rd Ferry 2.00 ct
For a 4 horse Wagon, at the 1st 75 ct, at the 2nd 1.25 & at the 3rd Ferry 1.75 ct
For every other wheeled vehicle, at the 1st 50 ct, at the 2nd 1.00 & at the 3rd Ferry 1.50 ct
For a man and horse, at the 1st 10 ct, at the 2nd 25 & at the 3rd Ferry 50 ct
For a Footman or lead horse, at the 1st 5 ct, at the 2nd 10 & at the 3rd Ferry 25 ct
For each horse in a Drove, at the 1st 3 ct, at the 2nd 5 & at the 3rd Ferry 10 ct
For head of other loose stock, at the 1st 2 ct, at the 2nd 3 & at the 3rd Ferry 6 ct
