First off, you would need access to the census, either on microfilm, CD, or at Ancestry.com. You can buy copies of these (cost is about $15 to $20 for the microfilm or CD), or possibly get the film on interlibrary loan (usually free), or through an LDS Family History Center (about $3.50). I have purchased census records on CD and microfilm, all online. One site for CD's is Heritage Quest, and one for microfilm is Microfilm Expeditors. I do not receive anything in return from these companies, for mentioning their names here. I am only giving you this information so that you can check out the sites for yourself, if you would like. There are other online resources for purchasing CD's and microfilm, but these are the two that I use, because they are the cheapest I have found, and the quality has been great. Once you have access to the census, all you need to do is copy everything that you see, exactly as it is written, then type it into a template. You would need a spread sheet program for this, such as Microsoft Excel or Works. That just about covers the basics. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! |
