Years ago when I was around 12 while visiting my great great aunt in Oklahoma I sketched out a map at her direction showing what road the Thompson family cemetery was located on in Dyer County. This map plus census records showing the Thompsons lived in District 7 matched up with the location of this unknown cemetery.

After getting permission from the landowner my cousin and I explored the abandoned cemetery. All we found were a few strands of wire apparently left from the cemetery fence. These indicated that the cemetery was probably around 15 by 20 feet in area. We had hoped to poke around in the ground and possibly find some toppled stones that had been covered up by a few inches of dirt and debris. However it appears that the cemetery has been used as a brush pile and two or three feet of dirt has been pushed up into the area since the ground was higher and very uneven. In any case all we found there were ticks, chiggers, and poison ivy.

Later that day in the genealogy room at the library we found a copy of a Sawyer Family History which explains that the cemetery was the Sawyer family cemetery. So I believe you can label that cemetery as the Sawyer Cemetery.

The writer of the history had the following probable burials:

Foust, George

Sawyer, Nancy, d: 1855

Several slaves including Chaney
