Essie Boals Ray

Funeral services for Mrs. Essie Boals Ray, 87, were held Saturday from George A. Smith and Sons Humboldt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron McMillan officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Newbern. Mrs. Ray, a retired school teacher from Memphis City Schools and the widow of Reggie H. Ray who died in 1967, died Friday at Humboldt Nursing Center.

A native of Covington she was the daughter of the late Robert “Bud” and Margaret Elizabeth Black Boals. She was a memeber of the East Side Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Memphis, the Delta Kappa Gamma and the Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Ray held a BS degree from George Peabody College in Nashville and a MS from Memphis State University. She was a very outstanding latin teacher directing the West Tennessee Latin Tournaments for several years.

Survivors include a sister, Miss Carrie Boals of Memphis; twelve nieces and nephews.

Casketbearers that served were Jim Loyd, Bobby Alexander, Harry Boals, Ramer Williams, Bobby Jelks, Bill Boals, Tommy Boals, Jerry Boals, Mobley Collinsworth and Ernest Boals, Jr.
