Humboldt Courier-Chroncle Gibson Co., TN Friday May 20, 1921 AFTER A LONG--varied and eventful career, DR. N. I. HESS died last Saturday at his home in Bells, aged 81 years. Dr. HESS came to Gadsden in 1866 and settled here to practice his profession. He remained here about 20 years and has lived in Bells many years. He leaves his fourth wife and ten children. (related item) Esq. & Mrs. W. M. DUNLAP were called to Bells Monday to attend the funeral of their relative, Dr. N. I. HESS. DEATH--Dr. N. I. HESS died at his home in Bells, Tenn., May 14th after an illness of several days, aged 80 years. He was born in Trenton, Tenn., in 1840. His father and mother; Dr. N. I. HESS Sr., and Miss Kittie HILL were married in 1839. He was educated in what was then called Andrew College. When about 21 years of age, he and his brothers, Andrew and John joined the Confederate Army and served in the army until the close of the war. He was wounded in the shoulder at the battle of Franklin, Tenn. At the close of the war, he and brother, Andrew studied medicine and John entered the ministry of the Baptist Church. Dr. HESS was greatly beloved by all his patients as well as by the citizens of the town and community where he lived and practiced medicine for 55 years. He is survived by his wife; four sons; six daughters; one brother; one sister; 24 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends, who mourn his death. |
