J. B. Humphreys was born in Madison County, Tenn., October 21, 1844. His father, William G. Humphreys, was born in this State March 29, 1820, and is still living. His mother’s maiden name was Mary E. Todd. She is a most excellent woman and is still living. Our subject is of Irish descent, and is the oldest in a family of eight boys and one girl. He remained with his parents until the age of majority. In 1864 he enlisted in Company B, Fourteenth Tennessee Confederate Regiment (cavalry), and served about one year. He then returned home and remained on the farm with his parents until twenty-one years old. He then began farming on his own responsibility, and has thus continued to the present time. His marriage with Emma Hardison occurred December 15, 1869, to which union five children have been born: Aurelius Edgar, Clara Ophelia, Lemuel Ethridge, William and Mary D. Mr. Humphreys is very pleasantly located, is the present county court clerk, and is a citizen who is universally respected for his public and private worth. Himself and wife are members of the Christian Church. He is a Democrat and a member of the Masonic order. The county has no better citizen. |
