Family of William Lawson Hays
Generation 1
1.

Edward L. Hays-1 was born about 1810 in North Carolina. He died after 1860 in Alabama.

Notes for Edward L. Hays:

General Notes:

William L. Hays stated in his Civil War Veteran Questionnaire that Edward L. Hays was his father and that he was born in Georgia. He said that his father was a farmer, did not own land and that his parents occupied a log house with 4 rooms. He mentions other sons of Edward that went to the war, Richard and Hardy and Marion. Transcriber had a hard time reading.

Further research finds that Edward L. Hays was actually born in North Carolina but that he and his wife early in their marriage moved to Georgia where 10 of the 11 known children were born. The family was in Georgia from 1835 (when the first known child was born) until the 1850 census when the family is found in Cherokee County, Alabama. They were still there in the 1860 census.

When William Hays in his Civil War Pension application stated that other sons also went to war, research finds that to be true. Richard, James, Lovely, Levi and William all enlisted on August 17, 1861. So of the known sons of Edward Hays, all went to war and enlisted in the 19th Regiment, Alabama Confederate Army on the same day. You wonder if they were all trying to get away from their father, because William stated in his pension application that his father worked them hard.

One son, Richard, died in the Civil War.

After the 1860 census, no further records could be found for Edward Hays.
