Notes from on "War Leaflets"

The following is what I have come up with so far on the people of Annie's story.

At the beginning of the story she mentions a Lt. Frank Hawkins of the area. Then all through the story she writes of her sweetheart Frank.

Franklin Hawkins was the brother of Alvin Hawkins who became governor of Tennessee. Hawkins, Alvin (1821-1905) Born in Bath County, Ky., December 2, 1821. Justice of Tennessee state supreme court, 1865-68; Governor of Tennessee, 1881-83. Died April 27, 1905. Interment at Hawkins Family Cemetery, Near Huntingdon, Carroll County, Tenn. Annie Cole married another brother Carmilius Hawkins who became Mayor of McKenzie, TN

Cousin to Alvin, Franklin, Carmilius Hawkins:

HAWKINS, Isaac Roberts, a Representative from Tennessee; born near Columbia, Maury County, Tenn., May 16, 1818; moved with his parents to Carroll County in 1828; attended the common schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced practice in Huntingdon, Carroll County, Tenn.; served as a lieutenant in the Mexican War; resumed the practice of law; delegate from Tennessee to the peace conference held in Washington, D.C., in 1861 in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending war; elected to the convention for the consideration of Federal relations; judge of the circuit court in 1862; entered the Union Army as lieutenant colonel of the Seventh Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, in 1862; captured with his regiment at Union City, Tenn., in 1864 and imprisoned; exchanged in August 1864 and resumed active service, being in command of the Cavalry force in western Kentucky until the close of the Civil War; commissioned by Governor Brownlow as one of the chancellors of Tennessee in July 1865 but declined to qualify; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1868; upon the readmission of Tennessee to representation was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-ninth Congress; reelected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses and served from July 24, 1866, to March 3, 1871; chairman, Committee on Mileage (Forty-first Congress); died in Huntingdon, Tenn., August 12, 1880; interment in the Hawkins family burial ground near Huntingdon, Tenn.

Lt. Franklin Hawkins the son of John Milton Hawkins and Mary Graham RALSTON Hawkins. Frank was killed in the war on August 14, 1864. I believe the unit he served in was TN 22nd Inf. Co.G. A World Connect entry shows him as dying in Harrisburg MI and buried in Carroll County, TN. This could possibly be Mississippi and not Michigan as it does not seem likely
that his body would be transported from Michigan to Tennessee in 1864.

Annie married  Cornelius Hawkins b. March 8, 1843. The 1880 census spell his name Carnilius and their marriage license spells his name Carnillus Hawkins. They were married November 9, 1868. Their two sons names were Homer and Franklin.

He severed several terms as mayor of McKenzie, TN. He was a younger brother of Frank. Listed on the 1870 census as a farmer. Listed on the 1880 Carroll county census as a Lawyer with one child, Homer. Annie's full name was Joanna Cole.

Annie is on the 1910 Carroll Co. census as a widow and having had 2 children with none living therefore Homer and Franklin died before 1910.

Annie’s sister Mary Jane Cole married William Richard Granade who served in the CSA in  5th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Mary Jane died in 1890 and William Richard committed  suicide in 1894. Their notes say that “Aunt Annie” took over the household duties.

In the original settling of what is now McKenzie, there were two families here that were "rivals". Each named the part of this towns area that they lived in a different name. One part of McKenzie was named Marrieta and the other part Dundas. It was still like this during the Civil War even though the community had much more to worry about at that time than the "rivalry' between the Sneads and the Gilberts. At that time there was a rather big family of McKenzie's that lived here. When the two railroads crossed here in 1867, the land for one of the railroads was GIVEN to the R.R. by James Monroe McKenzie with the stipulation that his son George McKenzie, Sr. would be given the position of station agent. When the first timetables came out they bore the name of "McKenzie, TN" and George McKenzie, Sr. became the first station agent for the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railroad. The name has stuck ever since. The year was 1869.

The following are the people she writes about in the order they appear in the story.

The kids she rode horses to school with were:

Garland SNEAD married Amy Elizabeth KELLY and was a merchant, prosperous farmer and a large land owner in the fourth Civil District of Carroll County and owned a sawmill. The census of 1860 listed his real estate value at $10,000 and personal property at $29,000. County records show that in March of 1860 he signed the right-of-way for the Nashville and Northwestern
Railroad to go through his farm. He started the settlement named Dundas. Carroll County (History 328). In 1860 a railroad camp was located on his farm where many railroad laborers lived.

When I started researching the names in Annie Cole Hawkins "War Leaflets" I searched the census on Heritage Quest for the McKenzie surname and did not find any. I'm sure Heritage Quest does not give the complete listings for the census as the horseback riders included the McKenzie brothers and sisters names and they would have had to have lived in either in Henry, Carroll or Weakley County.

I just tried another search under different spellings and did find James Monroe McKinzie in the 1870 census of McKenzie, Carroll County, TN. All but 2 of the children were in this census. The other 2 would have been old enough to have been married and not at home.

I also found one entry on World Connect of this James Monroe McKenzie that matched this family. This entry had several of the ancestors of his wife Martha Louisa Coleman but nothing further on the McKenzie family. My grandmother Rosa Mitchell Crabtree's sister was Mary Edna Mitchell who married James A. Allen. They had a daughter Ruby Allen that married William Alford Coleman. I have not as yet been able to connect this Coleman line to Martha Louisa Coleman but they did live in the same general area of Carroll and Weakley County.

Notice in the notes of these names that James and his son George McKenzie were the reasons for the naming of the town of McKenzie. George McKenzie was one of the children that rode horseback to school with Annie Cole. Also note the tragic story of the murder of Martha Louisa Coleman's father David Coleman which in a small way related to the recent war.

Ancestors of George McKenzie

Generation No. 1

1. George McKenzie, born Abt. 1849 in Tennessee. He was the son of 2. James Monroe McKenzie and 3. Martha Louisa Coleman.

2. James Monroe McKenzie, born February 14, 1818 in Tennessee; died October 09, 1878 in Carroll Co., TN. He married 3. Martha Louisa Coleman March 05, 1842 in Carroll County, TN.

3. Martha Louisa Coleman, born February 29, 1820 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina; died February 15, 1880 in Carroll Co., TN. She was the daughter of 6. David Coleman and 7. Sarah Love.

Notes for James Monroe McKenzie:

In the original setteling of what is now McKenzie, there were two familys here that were "rivals". Each named the part of this towns area that they lived in a different name. One part of McKenzie was named Marrieta and the other part Dundas. It was still like this during the Civil War even theough the community had much more to worry about at that time than the "rivalry' between the Sneads and the Gilberts. At that time there was a rather big family of McKenzie's that lived here. When the two rail roads crossed here in 1867, the land for one of the rail roads was GIVEN to the R.R. by James Monroe McKenzie with the stipulation that his son George McKenzie, Sr. would be given the position of station agent. When the first timetables came out they bore the name of "McKenzie, TN" and George Mckenzie, Sr. became the first station agent for the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railroad. The name has stuck ever since. The year was 1869.

Excerpt from "War Leaflets" by Annie Cole Hawkins.

Some of the children of James Monroe McKenzie are included below:

It is pleasant to recall and think of the days of laughter and song when school hours closed. The girls and boys mounting the horses while some whirled off in buggies and carriage. Others walking in groups to the near boarding houses. Each and all happy or miserable as the cases might be in the thought and plans of tomorrow.

The horse back riders were happiest of all and quite a number had to start out on our road among whom were Reuben Burdet, Lue and Billie Dinwiddie, Bernard Gordon. Jack Swain, Armstead Gordon, Wash Ridley, Brutus Gaines, Bettie and John Harris, John Pate, Tom Barker, Mollie Baker, Sallie McKenzie, and four brothers, John, Albert, George and Malcolm.

Professor E. H. Randle, was the principal and the rules of school were that the boys and girls would not ride together or run the horses.

Newbill, Carroll County, Tennessee

URL: /tncarroll/towns/carrnewb.htm

Newbill, 19th District, became known as "Big Buck" from a big steer named Buck that walked the treadwheel powering the cotton gin. Eearliest known settlers were Enoch Morgan and Needham Green. The post office was called "Newbill." Records compiled by Chester McAlexander state that J.M. COLEMAN was postmaster from April 21, 1892 to February 28, 1907 when the mail was carried by route to McKenzie.

Some of the older homes were built about 1830 such as the Morgan home with the date carved on a log 1830, The David Coleman home, the Fuqua Home and the Guthery Home.

On January 25, 1870, DAVID COLEMAN was murdered by a band of raiders, and his gold has never been found. The community was very upset as this man took no part in the War that was the cause of his death.

John Norman came to Carroll County in 1828 and became a large part of the local and state government.

There were 3 water mills, a stave mill making wooden barrels and a tobacco barn. An important industry was the foundry near Etta Colman's Store which made the "Fuqua Plow," the first one horse turning plow used in the area.

Barker's Chapel Methodist Church was the first organized, then Union Academy Missionary Baptist and Zion Cumberland Presbyterian. The first school is believed to be Collins School with Blockers, Wilders and Zion later.

Stage coach mail route drivers used Pete Smith's Store as a station to rest and change horses. Thomas W. and David Duncan lived near and Duncan Thompson is buried in the local cemetery. The school was where Vernon Murphy lived.

DAVID COLEMAN'S DEATH

From THE MEMPHIS PUBLIC LEDGER, THURSDAY JAN. 27, 1870

BLOODY WORK - OLD CITIZEN MURDERED FOR HIS MONEY IN OWN HOME FIVE OF THE MURDERS KILLED BY HIS SONS:

Col. David Coleman an old and wealthy citizen, of the highest standing was murdered in his own house, four miles from Trezevant, by a band of robbers last Saturday night. The murder was committed for the purpose of carrying out a robbery, and was one of the most cold blooded, diabolical deeds that has displayed the annals of West Tennessee.

Col. Coleman in easy circumstances never sold any cotton since the War though raising it every year until a days ago when he carried fifty bales to Martin. The supposition in the community was that he had a large sum of money in the house. Shortly after dark last Saturday night a party of men rode up to his gate and called for him to come out. He hesitated but finally went to the door and particially opened it. The appearance, of the crowd confirmed his suspicions and he retreated. The robbers at the same instant opened fire on him and he fell, pierced with three balls and apparently dead. It seems that there was no other white person about the house but a negro escaped and notified Col. Coleman's sons who lived on an adjoining place. They armed themselves as quick as possible and repaired to the place and

found the robbers searching the house. One of them on watch gave the alarm and the whole party fled to their horses and escaped, though two of them probably went on foot for the Coleman's were so close on them as to get two of their horses, this enabled them to identify some of the crowd subsequently, Col. Coleman lingered until Monday night and died. On Sunday five negroes were arrested and acknowledged that they were concerned in the affair, and also mentioned two white men who led them.

The white men have escaped from the county. On Monday the negroes were committed to jail in Huntingdon the county seat of Carroll County some ten or fifteen miles from the scene of the tragedy. Tuesday night the 25th inst. the two sons of Col. Coleman at the head of the considerable party of their neighbors appeared at the Huntingdon jail and demanded the prisoners. They were not disguised and made no pretense nor concealment at to who they were. The jailer refused to give up the boys and made a bold front for (it just ends here).
