Rev. Amzi Stargel
and Nancy Chambers Stargel

My great-grandfather Amzi
Hilliard (A.H.) Stargel was pastor of
Shoal Creek Baptist Church, White
County, Georgia. He died while pastor there
in 1905. He and his family moved to White County from
Dahlonega, Georgia about 1900. Shortly before his death,
his wife and family moved to New Holland, Georgia
to work in the new New Holland Cotton Mill. Amzi
would visit his family in New Holland . But, he stayed
part of the time near his church so that he could
pastor the church. Some time after his death his widow
moved to Greenville, SC. When she died in 1930, her
body was carried back to Shoal Creek Baptist Church.
She, her husband, and one of their daughters are
buried in the church cemetery.
The attached picture is of
Rev. Amzi and his wife Nancy
Chambers Stargel. They had ten children, three girls
and seven boys. They are Amanda, Leora, Callie, John,
James, Lemuel, Laura, Gordan, Virgil, and Jesse. They
have all died. The last one to die was Lemuel Stargel
in 1973. Jesse Stargel is my grandfather. He married
Leila Ellen Hammond. Their children are Ethel, J.D.,
Gladys, Mildred, Lillian, Elizabeth, and Frances.
Frances and Mildred are still living. Mildred Jessie
Stargel Center is my mother.
