Located between Cavalry and Forest Hill Cemeteries.
Was once called "Congregation Children of Israel Cemetery" and is the largest in Shelby County of Jewish Nationality.
The cemetery was extablished in 1885 and comprises of 10 acres. Over 3,000 burials of the Jewish Faith. In 1854 the Congregation Children of Israel Cemetery was chartered
Prior to 1885 the Jewish inhabitants of Memphis interred their dead in the cemetery of the Congregation Children of Israel on Bass Ave at the head of Adams St. The new cemetery established on the old Hernando Road which was at that time two miles from the city limits was for a while known as the "New Hebrew Cemetery" (Keating's History of Memphis, Vol II, page 306)
The old cemetery of Bass Ave fell into disuse. The present ground on Hernando Road was purchased in 1885, ten acres in all; and the new cemetery was dedicated on October 11, 1885. The bodies interred in
the old cemetery was transferred, and the former property was sold for building lots. A mortuary chapel was erected at the cemtery in 1886.
When the new property was dedicated, fifty nine family lots were sold ranging from $10.00 to $25.00 in prices. (exerpts from Congregation of Israel).
