This picture was taken circa 1900, as the older woman sitting in
front died in 1904 in Shelby County, TX, if in fact this is Caroline Mahala
MATHIS
( could be someone else, may be a Sallie MARTIN CAMPBELL, wife of George
CAMPBELL, if so, its the mother of Fannie Jane CAMPBELL, standing with her
husband Millard Fillmore WITHERSPOON on back roll ). Family thinks the picture
is of Caroline MATHIS though.
Her name was Caroline Mahala MATHIS, born 1813 in
Gibson County, daughter of William MATHIS married to Lydia CARLTON, both died in
Gibson County, TN. Caroline MATHIS married a William F. WITHERSPOON, in
1836, in Gibson County, TN. William died on a wagon train west, from old
family stories, circa 1860. Caroline moved with her younger children to
Shelby County, TX to live with her oldest son, James M WITHERSPOON soon after
William died.
