14 of July - 1863

My Dear Dear Sissy,

Days and weeks have flown since I have had an opportunity to write to you, until today I have that chance. Sissy you don't know how I miss you when you went away. I could not eat for three days and every time I think of you I commenced crying. It seem to me as if it would break my heart. Mrs. Taylor asked me hadn't I most cried my eyes out because you had gone. I told her I had cried the tears out but had left my eyes to see you. Sissy, you know you have watched over me as a mother and I shall never forget although you may be far away and I can sit and think what you have done for me, but oh the sadness that swell my innermost heart when I count the many days and weeks that have past since I heard from you, it seems to be sometimes, more than I can bear. Sissy my hand tremble so I can't write. Give Brother my best respects. Mr. Rice told me to give you his best respects and to Mr. Wilkins too. Pa is up and about, but very weak. Write to me the first chance you can get Sissy. Burn this letter up, don't let nobody see it please will you. Harry told me to tell Mr. Wilkins he did not like him because he had taken his Sissy away. Harry talks a good deal about you. I am in a great hurry, excuse bad hand writing - do if you please, write to your poor little Sissy. Mrs. Taylor told me to give you her best respects. Aunt Miley told me to give you her love and she would be up and see you before long.

(Dear Dear Sissy = Addie Jones: Mrs. Taylor, was probably a resident of Memphis: Brother and Mr. Wilkins refer to Addie's first husband. They were married about 7 months before the date of this letter: Mr. Rice is probably another resident of  Memphis where Anna lived: Harry is a half-brother of Anna's and Addie's: Pa is Thomas Jones: Aunt Miley, I don't have a clue:)
