OAK GROVE CEMETERY AT THE METHODIST CHURCH
EDISON AREA OF FRUITLAND
GIBSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE
Mapquest

This record was recorded November 21, 22, 23, and 24, 1996 by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Byrnes Jones of 509-77th Street, Holmes Beach, Florida. Mr. Jones is the Great-Great Grandson
of Rev. and Mrs. John Washington Jones buried in this cemetery. Reverend Jones was affiliated with this church.
The recording began at the back or northeast corner of the cemetery. Each row is recorded from north to south. Arbitrary decisions had to be made about which row some grave
monuments belonged in.
This experience was unique, rewarding and fulfilling. As I read aloud each inscription to my wife, Mary Ann, I remembered how on a special occasion each name is read out loud at
the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. I feel that I may have read a name that has never been said out loud since the person's burial.
When pausing to rest, it was easy to meditate, to envision the funeral processions, of long ago some long and some short. Processions, with many people, few, or none but the
"undertaker" who came to put to rest the deceased. Be it the stillborn infant or the aged who outlived
all others. This is their sacred worldly home, and we are momentary-guest. Seeing just, a stub of a long ago lost marker causes one to also realize the futility of material
remembrances.
This record is being given to The Oak Grove Cemetery Society, The City Libraries of Trenton, Humboldt, Jackson, and the State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tennessee.
A copy of this report has been given to Emily Walker of Trenton, Tennessee for inclusion in her next publication of Gibson County Cemetery Records to insure a wider
distribution of the data. A copy to Fred Culp of Trenton Tn., Gibson County Historian, also.
It is hoped that any omission or corrections discovered will be brought to the attention of the above holders of this record.
On the third day of the recording the temperature was 39 degrees and windy. We could only endure it two hours. It was our labor of love and some real togetherness.
"All the world is a stage..."
we click and clack, carrying out our act...
at times busy as a bee headed into our destiny...
.... " then to be heard no more" (Mixture of somebody and me, Robert.)
"Good-by proud world! I'm going home.
I am going to my own hearth-stone,
Bosomed in your green hills alone,.....
A spot that is sacred to thought and God." Emerson's, Good-By
                       EXPLANATION OF ABBREVIATIONS AND SYMBOLS
? = illegible. " " and ( ) are copied as on the stone. -- Means no date inscribed.
[ ] are used by the transcriber for clarification. y. or y's = years, m. or m's = months,

by, Robert Byrnes Jones, a 2nd Great grandson of Reverend John Washington Jones.
