INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--A beautiful wedding at the home of the bride’s
parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.F.MILES,Tuesday,January 27th at 6 p.m.,when Miss Stella MILES
became the bride of James Carl DUNGAN.He is the son of Mrs.J.C.DUNGAN.
--Mrs.J.H.ROZZELL entertained with a six o’clock dinner Monday evening in the home
of her brother,Carl DUNGAN and bride.
MILAN,TENN.,JANUARY 31. DEATH--Mrs.Ludie WILLIAMS,71,died at her home
several miles northwest of Milan.She is survived by two sons,Carroll & Alex WILLIAMS;
one daughter,Mrs.Bessie SELLERS.Interment followed in the Idlewild Cemetery.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Buck AUSTIN,of Jackson,spent
Sunday with his mother,Mrs.H.E.AUSTIN.
--Mrs.R.L.THOMPSON is spending this week in Humboldt the guest of her
sister,Mrs.Vickie LOVE.
--Mrs.D.B.DODSON is visiting her daughter,Mrs.John PERRY in Birmingham,Ala.
--Mrs.Jim MIDYETT,of Bells,spent Monday with Mrs.Jim McMILLIN.
--Mr.& Mrs.Burns WHITE and children,of Jackson,visited her father,Trustee WILSON
and family here.
--Mrs.Jim McMILLIN,little daughter,Mary Love,and sister,Miss Mary CATES spent the
week-end in Halls,guests of Mrs.Lee BRANDON.
--Postmaster J.W.EMISON is seriously ill at his home.His children,Mr.& Mrs.Colie
EMISON,of Bells; Mr.& Mrs.Carl EMISON,of District #7;and Ben EMISON of Memphis
are at his bedside.
--Mr.C.H.EMISON,of Washington,will arrive in a few days to attend the bedside of his
grandfather.
--Mr.J.N.McMILLIN and sister,Mrs.Emily MIDYETT,of Bells,attended the funeral of
Dr.Teck ROBINSON at Eaton Tuesday.
--Mrs.N.A.McMILLIAN received a message Sunday night informing her of the death of
her son-in-law,Dr.Teck ROBINSON of Eaton.
SANDERS BLUFF ITEMS--Mr.& Mrs.Noah GULLET were very much greived
Monday,January 31st,as they had to lay to rest one of their little twins,to await Judgement
Day.
--We are glad to see Mrs.Alex MULLINS able to be away from home and visiting her
daughter,Mrs.W.M.STEGALL.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--James HUGHES,of Coldwater,KY is
visiting his brother,Edgar HUGHES.
--Fred HUGHES left the 15th for Shreveport,LA where he has accepted a position with
the James Brotherton Accountants Office.
MILAN,TENN. JANUARY 31st--Al CROCKER,a well-known farmer and stockman of
Gibson County and Miss Rosa OLIVER,of near Ganes,six miles north of here were
married.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--An aged gentleman,Thomas CARTER,died in Madison County last Friday,and his remains were interred in Raines’Cemetery
Saturday.He was the grandfather of Marvin CARTER of Humboldt.
SOCIETY--Mrs.Estelle EDWARDS,of East Humboldt,and Mr.Ernest LEE,of
Clarksburg,West Virginia,were married at Trenton last Saturday.
--Mrs.Jno.CRISP and Bill LASTER of Trenton,attended the funeral of their
cousin,Mrs.Novella Hill PARSONS last Wednesday.
--Mrs.Ray M.BALYEAT,of Okla.City.is here at the bedside of her
mother,Mrs.J.M.BRIGHT.
--Mrs.Joseph WEST,of Marksville,LA is here guest of her parents,Mr.&
Mrs.G.S.LANNOM.

Memphis Tuesday.His daughter,Miss Mary,was with him in his last illness.

--Mrs.GRAVES,of Atlanta,is visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.P.J.PYPASS.
--Jim PARKER,a respected colored man,died in this city Monday and his funeral was held
Tuesday afternoon,burial in Oakland Cemetery.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.Tom BADGETT has returned to
her home in Crockett Mills after visiting her son,Bob BOLING.
--Jeff THOMPSON,of St.Louis,was called to the bedside of his sister,Mrs.Will
CASTLEMAN,who died here Monday morning.
--Charles WHITE,of Memphis,attended the funeral of his aunt,Mrs.Irene Thompson
CASTLEMAN.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Carl THOMPSON,Jr.,of Tulare,Calif.,was
here Sunday.Carl is the son of Don THOMPSON,deceased,and grandson of
Mr.F.M.THOMPSON,who died in Humboldt last week.
IN MEMORY OF MRS.PHOEBA WALLACE--Phoeba WALLACE was born April
8,1835 and departed this life December 17,1920,age 85 years,8 months,and 9
days.”Aunt”Phoeba was married to J.H.WALLACE November 10th,1853,and he
preceded her to the Glory Land July 6th,1912.To this union eight children were
born,Edgar,who died in infancy;Sallie & Lou,dying in young womanhood;five children
survive:Mrs.Jennie GLEESON & Mrs.W.C.GLEESON,both of Gibson,TN;
J.L.WALLACE,of Bell City,MO; W.H.WALLACE,of Cape Girardeau,MO; and
J.R.WALLACE,of Medina,TN; one adopted son,W.M.WALLACE,of Wilson,AR.Burial
was beside her companion in Double Springs Cemetery.--by One Who Loved Her.
DAVIDSON CHAPEL--Mrs.Beulah LOWERY,wife of Albert LOWERY,died last
Wednesday and was buried Thursday in Vaughn’s Chapel Cemetery.Her husband and three small children survive.
A GOLDEN WEDDING--An enjoyable day last week was Thursday,Feb.3rd at the home of Mr.& Mrs.J.M.HEFLEY,3 1/2 miles west of Humboldt when a dinner was spread for
their friends and relatives celebrating their 50th year of happy married life.
COXVILLE ITEMS R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Douglass,son of Mr.&
Mrs.J.T.JAMES is ill with pneumonia
--Luther EVANS,of Fairview,has been confined to his room suffering fron erysipelas.
--Ira REASONS,who accidently shot himself while hunting last week is still in the hospital
with a right bad wound.Septicemia had already set up when he arrived there,so a right
smart of flesh had to be trimmed away.
--Two estimable ladies of the Quincy community died Monday night,Mrs.John HART of
pneumonia and Mrs.Will CASTLEMAN of heart failure.Mrs.HART was buried at Cairo Cemetery and Mrs.CASTLEMAN at Pond Creek Cemetery.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Mr.T.N.NELSON left Saturday for
Stockton,Calif.,to visit his son,Harris NELSON.
--Mr.Edd HUMMELL,who has been vising his uncle,J.B.FOLTZ and wife for several
weeks,returned Monday to his home in Indianapolis,Ind.
DIES IN MEMPHIS--Humboldt relatives and many friends learned Tuesday with much sadness of the death of Dr.Thomas H.CRAIG,which occurred at the Baptist Memorial
Hospital,Memphis on Tuesday Feb.8th.He formerly lived in Humboldt and practiced his
profession here for some years.a number of years ago he located at Johnson,s Grove,in
Crockett County and had lived there most of the time since.The remains were brought
back to Friendship Wednesday for interment.He is survived by his wife,Mrs.Mary CRAIG
and daughter,Miss Mary CRAIG.
WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Mrs.Mattie B.JAMES is at home from a
protracted visit to her daughter,Mrs.John CARR,at Birmingham,Ala.
--Thomas SMITH,of Fulton,KY is visiting his father,Benjamin Smith and family south of
town.
--Miss Lalla CARTER of Milan is visiting her sister,Mrs.W.E.ASKEW.
--Etta BARNES of Medina and Guy WALKER of Jackson,were married Wednesday
aftrnoon by Rev.MOBLEY.
--Mr.& Mrs.Knox JACOBS,of Jackson,were guests of their sister,Mrs.Mattie GOWAN
Sunday.

--Following a beautiful wedding ceremony Monday evening at the bride’s home at
Lavinia,uniting Miss Susie COLEMAN and Mr.Damon WATT,of Spring Creek,the bridal couple motored to Medina and an elegant reception was tendered by the groom’s
sister,Mrs.W.J.BOONE.
SANDERS BLUFF NEWS--We are sorry to hear of the death of Mr.James BLACK.Our sympathy to the bereaved ones.
--We are sorry to hear of the death of the little baby of Mr.& Mrs.Myrt BLACK.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Messrs.Will & John DODSON
attended the funeral of thier uncle,Dr.Tom CRAIG last week.
--Mrs.R.L.THOMPSON was called to Bells Wednesday to the bedside of her
brother,Mr.Ike BOLING,who has double pneumonia.
--Mrs.Tom CRAIG,of Johnson’s Grove,spent Friday and Saturday with her
sister,Mrs.David DODSON.
--Dr.Tom CRAIG died at his home at Johnson’s Grove on Tuesday of last week.his death
came as no surprise as he had been in failing health for some months.His remains were laid
to rest at Mt.Zion.
--Mr.James PATRICK,of Huntingdon was called to the bedside of his
mother,Mrs.S.F.PATRICK,who is quite ill.
--Mrs.Hill BURNETT and daughter,Caroline,spent the week in Bells with her
grandmother,Mrs.WORRELL.
DYERSBURG,TN Feb.11th--Doyle BECKETT,a young man arrested here yesterday on suspicion of being implicated in the killing of Laddie May ADCOCK,11-year-old daughter
of William ADCOCK,after an examination of about 3 hours by officers was locked in
jail.At about the time BECKETT was arrested,Frank SHAW,aged 22,was arrested at Lenox,four miles from the crime scene.About 1 a.m.this morning SHAW plunged the
blade of a pocket into his stomach,he was brought to Dyersburg and placed in a local
hospital.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Dr.R.A.KIMBROUGH,of Blue
Mountain,Miss.,was here Saturday,guest of his sister,Mrs.W.E.DUNLAP.
--Mr.Sam LEWIS left Monday on a short trip before going to Okla.City,Okla.to take
charge of the local office of the United States Specialty Corp.
COXVILLE ITEMS R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Mr.& Mrs.Wheeler BYRD
are the proud parents of a fine boy,born Saturday night.
--Mr.& Mrs.J.R.CULP are rejoicing over the arrival of a new grandson in the home of
Mr.& Mrs.L.M.CULP.
--Mrs.F.P.DRINKARD,aged 86 years,was buried at Salem C.P.Church,this county,last
Monday.Since her companion died several years ago,she had been making her home most
of the time with her eldest son at Laneview,Gibson County.Five children,as well as her
husband had preceded her to the Great Beyond.Surviving children are: B.F.,of Laneview;J.B.,of GADSDEN; Edd & R.C.,both of the old homeplace and
Mrs.W.P.HALL of Hicksville.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Mrs.Annie NOWELL,of Bells,is visiting her
parents,Mr.& Mrs.G.E.TODD.She expects to join her husband in Tulsa,Okla.,where they
will reside in the future.
--Mr.& Mrs.Paul JAMES,of Union Grove,visited their parents,Mr.& Mrs.Newt
PATTERSON.
--On the night of February 6th,the spirit of Mr.R.S.MATTHEWS took its flight to realms
unknown.Gor many months he had been a sufferer,with a cancer on his face,so death came
as a release to his meek and gentle spirit,which returned to God who gave it.He served
throughout the Civil War,and always cherished the memory of the Lost Cause.He died at
the home of his son,Bob Lee,in Madison County.This son and his wife cared most tenderly
for their aged father.After 82 years of service and devotion,his feeble body was tired and
ready to lay him down in the last long sleep,to await the Resurrection morn.He leaves his
wife,three sons and three daughters.
UNION GROVE--Miss Lyda HOPPER,of Montezuma,TN,is the charming guest of her sister,Mrs.Ethel REASONS.
SOCIETY--On Wednesday evening,January 19th,at the home of the bride’s parents,Miss
Mildred UTTERBACK and David James CRADDOCK were married.
--Mrs.Viola PEARSON,formerly of Memphis,guest here of Miss Emma JAMES,left
Friday for New York,where she will make her home with her daughter,Miss Jean
TOLLEY.
--Mr.& Mrs.L.C.HOLCOMB and daughter,Charlotte Ellen,of Lexington,are visiting their
parents,Mr.& Mrs.E.M.HENDERSON.
--Miss Odie HUNDLEY,of Whiteville,TN is spending this week in Humboldt,the guest of
her sister,Mrs.T.M.CLAUNCH.

LOCAL NEWS--Thomas FREEMAN,of Enid, OK arrived Sunday evening to be at the bedside of his mother,who died Monday evening.
--Mrs.O.B.FREEMAN died at her home on Church Street Monday about 8 p.m. after a long illness.Services at the Baptist Church,burial in Oakland Cemetery.She is survived by
her husband;three children,Mrs.Leibig HUNT,Thomas and Robert FREEMAN.
COXVILLE ITEMS,R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Ira REASONS was dismissed
from the hospital about a week ago,but is not yet able to walk.His wound was
considerably worse than was first thought.
--Ozie BRASFIELD,who was wounded while fooling around with dynamite
Christmas,can now get about some on crutches.
--T.E.ROSS and daughter,Miss Annie Lee,made a hurried trip to Woodland Mills,Obion
County,one day last week,to the bedside of his aged mother,who died and was buried
Monday.
--Mr.& Mrs.Henry HEFLEY have a new boy in their home.
DEATH--Mrs.Martha WILLIFORD died at the home of her daughter,Mrs.L.H.PIERCEY Monday,after a short illness of blood poison.She was 85 years old and survived by four
children.Burial at Hopewell.
DEATH--Annie Will,the little 10-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Ollie JONES,died at the
family home about one mile north of Humboldt on Thursday night.Burial in Rose Hill
Cemetery.
BEAUTIFUL HOME DESTROYED BY FIRE--The home of Mr.& Mrs.E.A.CRADDOCK at the corner of 17th Ave. and Mitchell Street was completely destroyed by fire at an
early hour Saturday morning.Mr.& Mrs.J.B.ODOM,who occupied rooms in the second
story were singed and only escaped by jumping from a second story window.They lost all their possessions that were in the house,except a few clothes they
grabbed before jumping.They suffered some painful burns and the former a
sprained back when he jumped to the ground.Mr.CRADDOCK,wife and children got out with the clothes they had been wearing.Misses Orbyn CRADDOCK and Ruth
STINSON,who had rooms in the house,escaped only with their night clothes and robes.
NEWS FROM ANTIOCH & BAKER’S CHAPEL--Miss Nors DeBERRY is spending
this week in Oldfield as a guest of her sister,Mrs.A.B.GLOVER.
--Miss Gladys DeBERRY was a guest of her grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.J.W.BAKER.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--A wedding was solemnized February 22nd at 8 p.m.at the home of the bride’s sister,Mrs.O.T.YATES,Memphis;when Miss Bessie
WALKER became the happy bride of George DAVIS,of Tyrone,NM Rev.NEAL officiating.Little misses Bessie & Essie YATES,twin neices of the bride were ring bearers.
--Virgil CLIMER & Annie Mai MILFRED,prominent young people of New Enterprise
community were married last Saturday at the home of Esq.R.D.ESTES,who officiated.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.R.D.DODSON,after a pleasant
months’ stay in Birmingham,AL with her daughter has returned home.
--Mrs.John PERRY,of Birmingham,AL is visiting her mother,Mrs.Dabney DODSON and other relatives.
--The friends of Mrs.J.C.MURPHY surprised her with a “Stork Shower” Friday at the
home of her mother,Mrs.CANADAY.
--Little Roy FOLLIS,of Memphis,is sick with pneumonia at the home of his grandparents
at Liberty Hall.His mother was called to his bedside Sunday.
--Miss Anna WORRELL left Monday for Kingsland,AR to be with her sister,
Mrs.J.B.JONES,who is ill.
--Taylor WHITE,of near Quincy and Florence OLDHAM,of this city were married
Wednesday evening.
IN MEMORY OF R.S.MATTHEWS--In the Hart cemetery,February 7th,1921,he was
laid to rest beneath the sod and the dew,to await the Judgemant Day.In the spring of
62,he responded to his country’s call.He was one of the sixty-five brave men who
volunteered in Captain McKENNIE’s Company,of Gadsden.
IN MEMORY OF JAMES BLACK--On Friday,February 11th,the home of Mrs.James
BLACK was made very sad as the Death Angel came and took from them, Mr.James BLACK,one whom they dearly loved.He was 78 years, 1 month, and 11 days of
age.Mr.BLACK was twice married.First he married Miss Mollie MARTIN,Nov.30,1865 and they journeyed through life together many years together.Twelve Children were given
them,and he had to lay her to rest September 21,1891.Afterwards,he was married to
Mrs.Mandy THOMPSON,they had 28 years together,then he was called away to await her
coming.One child,Floyd,was given them.He was a good father.He raised three grandchildren and two step-sons;Feak & Willie THOMPSON. Feak was with him until
death.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Harvey JACKSON has been confined to his bed with pneumonia.
--Mr.Clifton SMITH,formerly of Columbus,miss.,now of Memphis,spent the week-end with his wife’s parents,Mr.& Mrs.C.T.HAMILTON.
--Joe JAMES,son of Mr.& Mrs.J.W.JAMES,who suffered a badly broken arm some days
ago,has been in a Memphis hospital this week having the arm reset.He was accompanied
by his aunt,Miss Emma JAMES.
--Mr.Harris NELSON,who arrived in Humboldt last week with his father,
Mr.T.N.NELSON,who had gone to California seeking him,has been quite ill
since,suffering from nervous prostration.
UNION CITY,TENN.,FEBRUARY 22nd--Mr.& Mrs.Pink CLOYS,whose home is on
North Cheatham Street,this city,have been married 71 years in May.Six children were born
to them,all of whom are married.He is now 93 years of age and she is 88.
SOCIETY--Born to Mr.& Mrs.Coleman NICHOLS on Friday,February 25th,a daughter.
--Born to Mr.& Mrs.Herman HOLDER on Tuesday,February 22nd,a daughter.

COXVILLE ITEMS R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Messrs.Henry & eugene
McCORD,of Mason’s Grove visited in the home of their brother,Bob McCORD last
week.
--J.R. COX spent part of Thursday in the home of his daughter,Mrs.Ed MITCHELL,of
south Gadsden.
--Mr.& Mrs.Isham BURROW,of Gadsden,spent Monday in the home of their son,Oscar
and his wife,more especially for the purpose of being in the company of their new
granddaughter,who was born one day last week.
DEATH--This community lost one of its best citizens and neighbors Monday
morning,when Esq.Thomas P.HOPPER passed to his reward.His body was laid to rest in
Salem Cem.by Salem Church,where he had so often met with neighbors and friends to
worship God.The wife of his first marriage and mother of eight children,had preceded him
to the “Better Land”,leaving four sons who still survive.He was 70 years old.A few years
ago he was married a second time to a woman who so faithfully and patiently stayed him
and administered to his every want and need.
DEATH CLAIMS THREE CITIZENS OF BELLS--While this town and community was in sadness Wednesday evening because of the death of a precious good mother,and sweet
spirited Christian woman,Mrs.Virginia BARNES;little did we think the dawn of Thursday
morning would bring the added sorrow of the deaths of Mr.& Mrs.J.E.CASEY.Mrs.BARNES died at 2 p.m. Wednesday; Mrs.CASEY at 1 a.m. and
Mr.CASEY at 4 a.m. Thursday morning.Mrs.BARNES and Mrs.CASEY had been sick for less than a week; The death of Mr.CASEY was caused by the shock of the death of his
wife,as he was downtown Wednesday,and was as well as usual.As we go to press Thursday morning,we will say more of these good people,who have been prominent in the
affairs of the social,financial and religious life of Bells and community for the past thirty
years or more in our next issue.---The BELLS SENTINEL.
WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Mrs.Hilton MILLS has returned to her home in Memphis after visuting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.D.H.BOBBITT.
--Mr.& Mrs.Baxter BOONE,of Jackson,with Mr.& Mrs.Neil BOONE,of Paducah,KY are
attending the bedside of their father,Mr.R.R.BOONE,who has been seriously ill for several
weeks.
--Mr.Barney REPLOGLE,of this city and Linnie PIERCE,of FRIENDSHIP,were united in
marriage Saturday evening.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Death entered the home of Mr.Sam
WARREN Tuesday at 6 o’clock and claimed their only boy,age 4 months.
--Mr.Ike BOLING,after two weeks illness,died at his home in Bells Friday at 9:30
a.m.Services were held at the Christian Church in Bells,burial in Bellview Cemetery.He
was about 56 years old,and is survived by his wife;eight children;two sisters and three
brothers.
HORSE KILLES LITTLE CHILD--The little baby son of Mr.& Mrs.Fred SANDERS,of
near Sanders’Bluff,southeast of Humboldt,was kicked by a horse last Saturday
afternoon,and almost instantly killed.Mr.& Mrs.SANDERS were riding in a buggy and the
baby was in the mother’s lap.The horse became frightened when a strap broke and the
buggy ran up on it,and began kicking.One of the cruel hooves struck the 20-month-old
baby on the head.
NEWS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Mr.& Mrs.Robert E.WARREN attended the
funeral of little Annie Will JONES at Humboldt last Friday.
--Mr.& Mrs.T.P.JONES attended the funeral of their neice at Humboldt Friday.
--Ed.REEVES and sister,Miss Bettie attended the funeral of their neice,Annie Will Jones
Friday.
--Mr.& Mrs.H.W.REEVES were in Humboldt Friday,attending the funeral of their
neice,Annie Will JONES.
--Mrs.Vos BUCKNER and two children,Gelda & Johnie,spent the week-end with her
sister,Mrs.Kirb KENNER.
--Mrs.Annie CASEY was called Thursday to the bedside of her neice,little Annie Will
JONES,whose death occurred Thursday.
BELLS,TENN.,MARCH 1-DEATH--Mr.Henry LEWIS,age 67 years,died suddenly at the home of his son,two miles west of Bells,Friday morning.His wife preceded him to the
grave nearly 12 months ago.He leaves three grown sons.Burial in Bellvue Cemetery.
IN MEMORY--On last Saturday,Feb.25th,the home of Mr.& Mrs.Fred SANDERS was
made sad on account of the untimely death of their little son,Earnest Watson,1 year- 8
months and 11 days old.Burial in Antioch.
LOCAL NEWS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Mr.Garner ALMQUEST,of Jackson,spent
Sunday here with his sister,Miss Lurline ALMQUEST.
IN MEMORY--Mrs.Martha WILLIFORD,who was born Jan.29,1836,died
Feb.21st,1921,at the age of 85 years and 23 days.She was the mother of 12 children; 51
grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
SOCIETY--A wedding of much interest was that of Miss Annie Joe MALLETT,daughter
of Mr.& Mrs.Macklin MALLETT,and Mr.Coy C.BARRON,was solemnized on last Saturday evening at the home of the bride in Brazil,TN.
--Miss Fern CROOM,of near town,and Robert DYER,of Oakfield were united in marriage
Sunday afternoon at the home of the broide’s father,Paul CROOM.
--A wedding of interest was that of Carl KEENAN,of Yazoo City,MS and Ruth
PARHAM,of Jackson,TN which occurred in Jackson Wednesday.
--The funeral of Mr.R.D.STEPHENSON was held in Jackson Wednesday.He formerly lived in Humboldt,being manager of the Coca-Cola Bottling Works.

LOCAL NEWS--Mrs.Hugh LOVE,of Humboldt,was the guest of her
sister,Mrs.W.G.CONNER Monday.
COXVILLE ITEMS, R.F.D. #10 CROCKETT COUNTY--The community around
Fruitvale and Gadsden and the county in general lost a splendid citizen when Esq.Silas
EMISON died last Saturday.
--The community around Salem Church and adjoing territory lost a most exemplary citizen
when Mr.Joe BLACK “crossed over” last Friday evening at 8 p.m. He was 77 years old,a
member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mr.Frank BRATCHER,of Okla.,is here
visiting his brother,W.A.BRATCHER and family.This is his first visit since he left here 30
years ago.
Mr.Wheeler GRIGGS was called to Mason’s Grove Sunday to the bedside of his
brother,Bob GRIGGS,who is dangerously sick.

--Another of Crockett’s magistrates has answered the last summons--Esq.Silas
EMISON,whose death occurred last Saturday.His remains were interred at Cypress Sunday.He was about 50 years of age,he leaves a wife and four children.
--Another vernerable patriarch,J.C.BLACK,has been called to his eternal home,Friday,he
was 76,He leaves his wife,with whom he lived over 50 years;two sons;five daughters;burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Jackson,after a visit to her sister,Mrs.Homer SIMPSON.
--Miss Frances SHARP,of Lexington,is visiting her mother,Mrs.John FOSTER.

LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Little Dorris Anne CARTER,eight
months old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.A.CARTER,of near GADSDEN,died early Friday
morning of pneumonia and was buried Saturday morning at Raines Cemetery.
FRIENDSHIP,TENN.,MARCH 6th--Mr.& Mrs.G.L.HAMLET,of Crockett Mills,this
county,announce the marriage of their daughter,Rose Lee,to Carl Winston DROKE,of this
city;wedding to take place in April at the Christian Church there.
SOCIETY--A wedding of interest to a number of Humboldt people took place in
Chicago,Saturday afternoon,March 5th when Frances JEFFRIES became the bride of John
Orin KELLEY.
--On Saturday evening,March 5th,a quiet wedding occurred at the Baptist Church,when
Mary HAYNES became the bride of Phil MATTHEWS.

pastor,Rev MOBLEY at Hope Hill Tuesday afternoon,bore evidence of the love and esteem in which she was hels by relatives and friends.”Aunt Jennie”was 71 years of
age.She is survived by two brothers.The following relatives;Mr.& Mrs.Thomas PARRISH; Mr.& Mrs.Ed PARRISH; Mr.& Mrs.James Replogle,of Jackson; Mesdames
Kate & B.D.WHITE and Miss Emma WHITE of Lexington also attended.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mrs.Meg MORGAN,50 years,wife of
J.S.MORGAN,died at her home near here Monday afternoon,after an illness of several
months.She is survived by her husband,two sons,Calvin & Robert; three
daughters,Mrs.T.L.BURNS; Mrs.W.O.SLOAN; and Mrs.John PHILLIPS;six
brothers,R.T., J.B., W.F., Sam, Roy, and N.H.BOLERJACK.Services were held at the
residence by Rev.HICKS,the body laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery.
--Mrs.John WITT,Mrs.Jessie FLY and Miss Bessie NEALY attended the funeral of
Mrs.M.W.WHEELER at Milan Tuesday.
--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.O.D.STEPHENSON on Tuesday,a fine girl.
SANDERS BLUFF ITEMS--We are glad to know that the son of Mr.& Mrs.Myrt
BLACK,who has had pneuminia is improving.
--We are glad to know that Mr.Charlie NELSON,who has had pneumonia is improving.
--On last Thursday,the home of Mr.& Mrs.Callie PETERSON was made sad by the death
of their little son,J.C.,who was two years,3 months, 18 days.The remains were laid to rest
at Antioch Cemetery Friday.
DEATH--The sad news resched friends in Humboldt Monday that Joe EXUM had passed away of typhoid pneumonia at the family home,over the river in Madison County.He was a
son of the late M.B.EXUM and a brother of Mrs.G.J.ADAMS,of this city.Funeral services
were held in the family home,burial in Hollywood Cemetery,Jackson.
DEATH--F.M.NEWHOUSE,Sr.,died at the home of his son,W.L.,in Boonville,MS on
Sunday March 18th.He was about 80 years of age.He lived most of his life near
Humboldt.He is survived by two sons,W.L.,of Boonville and James of Humboldt; one
daughter,Mrs.Lizzie BANKS,of Trenton.
DALLAS,TEXAS EVENING JOURNAL--Mrs.Hardina J.HARPER,93 years old,died at
the home of her daughter,Mrs.W.H.McCALLUM Sunday at 4 a.m.She was the widow of B.J.HARPER,she came to Dallas in 1880.She was a native of Gibson County,Tennessee
and married Mr.HARPER in 1850.She is survived by four children;Mrs.CULLUM;
Mrs.S.B.BOLICK; Ben J.HARPER and James HARPER,all of Dallas;27 grandchildren;40 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.H.B.NANCE was called to Fulton
to the bedside of her neice,Miss Katherine BROWDER,who is very ill.
--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Tom BUCKINGHAM,a little daughter.
IN MEMORY--L.R.GREGORY-Born Feb.12,1852.Died at Tyler,MO March
13,1921.Age 69 years,1 month,1 day.He was a citizen of Madison County for more than
50 years.He is survived by his widow;five sons:Will, Charlie, and John,all of Madison
County;Elmer,of Tyler,MO and Ernest,who is in France with Uncle Sam’s Army; three
daughters: Mrs.Ida KING,of Madison County;Mrs.Lizzie CRAMER and Miss Mayme GREGORY,of Chicago; one sister,Mrs.Lizzie APPLETON,of MS; 15 grandchildren.

--Mrs.Lee BAILEY died at her home on High Street Saturday morning.Services at the
residence by Rev.DAVIS,interment at Olive Branch.She is survived by her husband and

BELLS,R.F.D. #3--A large crowd attended the sale of the late J.E.CASEY estate at Bells
Saturday
--Andy CASEY moved his family to Bells this week to look after the farming interests of
his brother,the late J.E.CASEY.
--Sanford PERMENTER is recovering from pneumonia.
--Mrs.J.A.McALISTER died Monday at her home in Bells,after several months illness of
tuberculois.She leaves a husband and several children,burial was in Bellvue Cemetery.

--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Everett WALDRON last Friday,a fine girl.
--Mr.R.L.LUFFMAN,about 50 years old,died at his home here Wednesday.He leaves six
children.The body was carried to Lessenberry’s Chapel for burial.
WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Mrs.Oscar BODKYN,of Bardwell,KY is
visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.H.MOUNT.
--Mrs.D.B.ROWLETT will spend the Easter season with her daughter,Mrs.Gerald
LOVELL,at Greensville,KY.
--Mrs.H.C.JOHNSON has returned to Jackson after visiting her sister,Mrs.Frank
RAINES.
BURNS CAUSE CHILD’S DEATH--With sad heart we chronicle the death of one of the
most lovable children we had in our midst,Master J.E.HAYS, 5-year-old and only child of
Mr.& Mrs.W.C.HAYS,which sad event occurred Tuesday night at 12 o’clock.While
Mrs.HAYS was preparing lunch Tuesday,the little fellow ran into the coal oil stove,turning it over,catching his clothing on fire,and before his mother could extinguish
the flames,he was burned so severely that death was only a matter of a short while.He was
known by nearly all our people,as he stayed at the produce house a great deal of the
time.His place in the M.E.Sunday School will be sadly missed,as he was there every
Sunday.

visiting her sisters,Misses Mell & Sallie SIMS,last Monday.
--Mrs.E.P.MITCHELL,of South Gadsden,with her two daughters,Mary & Dora,spent the
weekend with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.R.COX.
--Messrs.J.M.& E.B.COX were visitors in the home of Mr.& Mrs.J.C.SMITHERS at
Alamo Sunday.These fine old people have been very feeble for some time.

th bedside of her brother,Clyde MORRIS,who is quite ill.
--Mrs.S.E.JOHNSON was a guest over Tuesday of her cousin,Mrs.Ollie GRANT of Bells.
--Miss Robbie WATSON,of Elizabeth arrived Monday to be at the bedside of her
sister,Mrs.Leslie VERNON,who is quite ill at her home on Main Street.
--Miss Mary CATES has resigned her position in the Maury City School on account of
illness.She will leave in a few days for Halls to be with her sister,Mrs.Lee BRANDON.
--Mrs.J.L.WAINWRIGHT was in Maury City last week to see her
sister,Mrs.O.E.LEMOND,who is ill.
--Our town was thrown into a state of sadness Sunday morning,when news of the death of
Uncle Buck LAMBERT was wired over the county.He died Saturday at the home of his
daughter,Mrs.Dorsey BRASFIELD,in Friendship.He was quite old.After services,his remains were laid to rest in Pond Creek Cemetery.

their parents,Mr.& Mrs.George TODD,near town.
--Mrs.Pauline BRANCH,a trained nurse,of Memphis,visited her brother,Harry WILSON
last week.

last week.

Sunday, the 20th,for Shreveport, LA to visit his brother,Fred.
--Prof.H.H. ELLIS returned last week from Dover, TN where he was called by the death of

--Little Jack SHARP,baby son of Mr.& Mrs.J.P.SHARP,had the painful misfortune
Thursday to fall from his velocipede and break the large bone in one arm.

Vance to Jay Horace PICKETT Monday,March 21st,1921.They will make their home in Memphis.
