--Moro INGRAM & wife and Mrs.Minnie BUCHANAN attended the funeral and burial
of their nephew,O.B.FERRIS,at Nashville Wednesday.
--Mrs.HENRY has returned to her home in Murfreesboro after visiting her daughter,Mrs.Lofton FAIRLESS.
WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Miss Lura HAWKS,of Monteray is visiting her aunt,Mrs,Sam PATE.
--Mrs.Dulin HOWSE of Memphis, with her sister,Miss Berta Lou TOOMS of
Jackson,visited relatives here this week.
--Mrs.Paul BELEW has returned to Milan after visiting her mother,Mrs.Ida BOSWELL.
Mrs.Tessie ANDREWS is visiting her brother,Frank HARDISON and family at Ridgely.
--Mesdames Fayett UMSTEAD and Hattie WILEY of Jackson and Mrs.Robert
OLIVER,of Milan,were guests of their sister,Mrs.W.O.GRAVES Sunday.
--Hunter MILLS of this city and Cassie STRAYHORN of Lavinia were married Sunday
afternoon.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Jas.MORGAN,who has been in the U.S.Army
since the declaration of war with Germany,is at home for the first time since his enlistment.
--Mr.& Mrs.Max PYBASS of Tupelo,Miss.,have sent out announcements of the birth of a
fine girl,christened Maxine.
--Mrs.Bud STEWART & daughter of Milan,visited her sister,Mrs.Annie CASEY
Wednesday.
--Carlton SEDBERRY and Miss Johnnie CANNON were married on Thanksgiving day at
the home of the bride’s mother in Memphis.He is the son of Mr.& Mrs.M.A.SEDBERRY.
--Miss Eva CRICKMON of Bolivar visited her cousin,Mrs.John H.JACKSON last
weekend.
--Mrs.Hazel FISHER of Chattanooga is visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.M.A.SEDBERRY.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Among those who attended the funeral
of Mr.Walter HARDY at Bells Saturday were Mesdames S.E.JOHNSON &
R.W.FLEMMING.
--Mrs.Lelia OSIER & children of Henderson spent Thanksgiving here with her
parents,Mr.& Mrs.C.E.JERMAN.
--Mrs.Cora COLTRAIN and son will return from Jackson Tuesday.Adolphus is
recovering from the smallpox,and his mother,being with him,was quaratined for 30
days,she escaped the disease.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Little Helen WILLIAMS has entered the
School for the Blind in Nashville.
--Merle & Tom WILSON spent last week in Jackson with their sister,Mrs.Burnes
WHITE.
--Miss Jewel CLOUD of Humboldt spent Thanksgiving with her sister,Mrs.Herman
DAVIS.
--Mrs.Tina FIELDER of Memphis spent Thanksgiving with her sister,Mrs.J.A.RAINES.
--Mrs.Hugh NUNN of Ripley spent Thanksgiving with her sister,Mrs.C.W.RICHARDSON.
--The aged father of J.B.WALLIS died a few dayd since in Ark.On account of sickness in
his family,Mr.WALLIS could not attend the funeral.Mrs.Maggie BUCKINGHAM went
and has returned home.
--Paul RAINES and Miss Alleen MATHEWS were married Sunday morning at the
residence of Mr.& Mrs.James SMITH near Harris Grove.
AT THE RECRUITING STATION--Two men have been accepted for enlistment in the
Army: Thomas C.DOUGLAS of Lake County has enlisted for his fourth term of
service,and John I.LADD,of Humboldt,who goes to the Infantry at San Antonio,Texas.
UNION GROVE--Little James,three-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.M.L.DUNLAP,while
playing Sunday afternoon,let an old gate fall on him,which broke his leg between the hip
and the knee.
--James TAYLOR,grandson of Mr.& Mrs.E.J.MOORE,while playing with some friends
Sunday afternoon,put a lighted fire cracker into an army shell that had powder in it.It
exploded,tearing up his finger and inflicting painful wounds.
--Hulon DUNLAP was kicked on the forehead last Tuesday by a calf cutting a gash that
required several stitches.
--Ernest DUNLAP had a miraculous escape from death Tuesday, when the horse he was
riding fell catching him beneath it.
NEWS NOTES FROM ELDAD--Mr.& Mrs.Luther HUNT have moved from Gibson to
the home of her ? father, John HUNT.
--Mrs.Dovie PRUETT and Miss Mary KOFFMAN spent the week-end with their
mother,Mrs.I.J.KOFFMAN at Edison.
LOCAL NEWS HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Ben HUMPHREYS of
Uvalde, Texas is visiting his father,L.E.HUMPHREYS.
--Robert RAINEY of Jackson spent Thanksgiving with his uncle and aunt Mr.&
Mrs. R.L. DICKSON.
--L.H. ODOM of Dallas,Texas spent Thanksgiving with his brother J.B.ODOM & wife.
--The B.F. HAZELWOOD home just north of town burned at an early hour Monday
morning, very little was saved.
--Mr.James K.SUMPTER,age 69,died Tuesday at 8 a.m. at the home of
J.H. BUCKNER, south of Humboldt. The remains were laid to rest at Bethel graveyard
after services at the residence.He leaves one sister, Mrs.E.J. COPLIN,and a
nephew, Dr.W.L. COPLIN of this city.
--Mr.B.HIMELHOCH,who left Humboldt July 15th for Riga,Latvia,which is a country
formerly a part of the Russian Empire,landed in New York Monday and arrived in
Humboldt Thursday. He is bringing with him his sister’s four children and also his brother.
BELLS,TENNESSEE.DECEMBER 1st-DEATH--Mr.Walter HARDY, a prominent
citizen of Bells, died last Thursday at the home of his daughter in Nashville at the age of 67
years. The body was brought to Bells, burial at Bellvue Cemetery. He is survived by four
children.
SOCIETY--Miss Helen THOMPSON became the bride of A.P.MAYS of Milan
Tuesday,November 30th.
--Little Dorothy Dell THWEATT, daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.W.THWEATT has been quite
ill with diptheria.
IN MEMORY OF MRS.JIM McBROOM--On November 23rd,the death angel visited the
home of Mr.& Mrs.Will BIRMINGHAM and took away one from this home who was
loved by many.The deceased leaves a little boy, her mother, several brothers and sisters.

LOCAL NEWS--Mr.& Mrs.E.A.HERRON have announced the approaching marriage of
their daughter,Mary,to Charles B.SHANKLAND,of Arkdelphia,Ark.,to take place in
January.
--Mr.& Mrs.HALTOM and daughter have moved from this place to Ripley.
DEATH--Hazel Gill,son of the late George GILL, a veteran of the late war and a
well-known Humboldt boy died at his home Tuesday at 8 p.m.of pneumonia.He is
survived by his wife and baby;step-mother and two brothers, Morris GILL,of
Meridan, Miss.,and George GILL,of this city.Hazel was about 29 years of age.Services
were conducted at the family residence, burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
DEATH--The sad news reached Humboldt that Mrs. Ruth Yandell WRIGHT,wife of
Aubrey A.WRIGHT had died Wednesday in a Dallas, Texas hospital,following an
operation.she was an old Humboldt girl, and the remains are expected to reach
Humboldt,services will be held Saturday,interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.She is survived
by her husband;her mother,Mrs.Alice YANDELL;four sisters,Mrs.H.H.ROSS of
McKenzie;Lucille YANDELL of Memphis;Miss Wilkens YANDELL and Mrs.George
CRADDOCK of Humboldt; two brothers, Marshall and Howard YANDELL, both of
Memphis.
COXVILLE ITEMS R.F.D.#10,CROCKETT COUNTY--Mr.& Mrs.Byron KINCAID
visited his father,W.T.KINCAID ,near GADSDEN.
--Mr.& Mrs.J.M.COX and children visited her sister,Mrs.Emmett TATUM at Gadsden
Sunday.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.J.B.EMISON and two small
sons,Josef & Theophilus spent the weekend in Bells with Mrs.E.E.EDWARDS.
--Mrs.C.S.JERMAN was in Brownsville accompanied by her neice,Mrs.Herbert CATES
of Bells.
--Mr.& Mrs.Sam WARREN are poud parents of a little son born november 26th.

reared in Gadsden,but have made their home for a number of years in the golden west.
--Mrs.Annie CASEY is spending the week with the family of her brother,Arthur CASEY
At Fruitvale.
--Miss Maude MITCHELL was married in Memphis a few days ago since to H.J.JONES
of that city.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Miss Flossie YOUNG,daughter of Mr.&
Mrs.J.M.YOUNG of New Enterprise neighborhood,and Pete BENTHAL of the 12th
District,drove to Trenton last Saturday where they were married.
--Heskel SCOTT of near Lavinia and Mrs.Ivie WALLSMITH,daughter of
W.D.CROCKER,drove to the M.E.Parsonage Monday,where they were married while
seated in an automobile.
--Mr.& Mrs.Robert FOUST are the proud parents of a fine boy.
--Mrs.J.C.HICKS and son,Jack of Nashville are visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Ed
HICKEY.
NEWS FROM ANTIOCH AND BAKERS’CHAPEL--R.M.DeBERRY spent Sunday
with relatives near Humboldt and was accompanied home by his daughter,Miss Hortense.
--Mrs.R.M.DeBERRY visited her daughter,Mrs.G.B.GLOVER at Norwood this week.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Mr.J.N.MIDYETT of Jackson spent
Sunday with Humboldt relatives.
--Mr.J.W.HUDSON visited his son,Joe,at Columbus,Miss.Joe is a railroad tickett agent
there.
SANDERS’BLUFF NEWS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Eugene PIERCY,an 11 i/2 pound son.
--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.CROW,a 10 pound boy.
Society--Last Sunday morning,Mr.& Mrs.Sidney CLAUNCH gave an invitation of much
pleasure and surprise to their father,Mr.T.M.CLAUNCH,in a ready prepared dinner in
their home in remembrance of his 67th birthday.

HAPPINGS AT THE COUNTY SEAY-LOCAL NEWS--Mrs.R.C.ADAMS has gone to
Knoxville to spend several weeks with her daughter,Mrs.G.L.HARRINGTON.
--Hunter TYREE of Detroit,Mich.,and Miss Mary LASSITER of Jackson,TN will be
married in Chicago on the 23rd of this month.He is the son of Dr.C.E.TYREE of near
Trenton,she is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Andrew LASSITER of this place.
TRAGIC DEATH--One of the saddest and most deplorable tragedies that shocked this
community in a long while occurred Tuesday about 10 p.m.,when Robert Nelson,son of
Mr.& Mrs.R.H.NELSON,of near Humboldt,in a moment,probably,of mental
abberation,ended his own life.Robert was home on leave from the Navy,to which service
he had enlisted about one year ago and was preparing to return when as the father and
mother were preparing to accompany Robert to the train,when he stepped into another
room and shot himself in the head.He was about 19 years of age,this was his first visit
home since enlistment.Services were held in the family home,burial in Old Gibson
Churchyard.The parents and brothers are left to mourn.Another son died while in the
Army during the war.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.Lem McLEAN and three fine sons
of #7 spent Monday with her sister,Mrs.Leslie VERNON.
--Mrs.H.W.COOKE will be spending the holidays in Shelbyville with her
daughter,Mrs.Phil HOUSER.
--Olie KELLY of Caruthersville,MO who has been in the Presbyterian hospital in
Memphis for the last six weeks and part of the time dangerously ill,was able to leave
Monday and Clem HOWELL went to Memphis and brought him here to the home of his
parents.
--Sam WARREN had the misfortune of getting his leg broken Monday by falling off an oil
wagon.
--All the friends of the family of Mr.Jim LOWERY,who died suddenly Sunday afternoon
offer their sympathy.

COUNTY;1917;1918;1919”--Mrs.G.B.HARGROVE received a letter dated December
10th,1920 from Governor A.H.ROBERTS congradulating her on the book.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Mrs.Shepard cOX,of Coxville,visited her
sister,Mrs.E.L.LEMOND,at this place last Saturday.
--Mr.& Mrs.Clyde BOONE,who have recently returned from Texas,spent several days last
week with his father,Walter BOONE,at Gibson.
--Marvin YOUNG,son of Rev.W.C.T.YOUNG,deceased,died a few days since in
Arkansas.
--Esq.Starkey PEARSON was called to Memphis on account of the death of his
sister,Mrs.JAMES.
SOCIETY--Miss Eleise JARRELL will return the 22nd from a visit to her sister,Mrs.Fred
JACOBS,at Charleston,S.C.
--( On this page there is a picture of the PATTERSON family,who hold the community
age record;ages 90 down to 77 years.There are 2 girls and 4 boys.
--Tuesday,December 14th,was the 50th anniversary of Mr.& Mrs.J.W.BAKER.They have
6 children;18 grandchildren;and 6 great grandchildren.
--A wedding of interest occurred Tuesday evening at the home of the officiating
minister,Rev.ORR,when Genrose CONWAY and L.H.BODKIN were married.she is the
daughter of Mr.D.P.CONWAY,he is the son of Mr.& Mrs.E.E.BODKIN.

--Mrs.E.W.WARREN of Bristol is visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.W.P.KEENAN.
--Miss Elizabeth CALDWELL,who is teaching music in VA is visiting her parents,Judge
& Mrs.W.C.CALDWELL.
--Fire completely destroyed the handsome home of T.K.HAPPEL early Sunday morning.
--R.P.RAINES died at the Old Soldiers’Home in Nashville Thursday of last week,after a
long illness.The remains were brought here Friday and taken to the Virginia Hotel,where
services were conducted Sunday morning by Rev.TODD,burial in Oakland Cem.He was
74 years old,an old soldier,a lawyer of the Trenton bar and is survived by two daughters
who live in St.Louis.
DEATH.GIBSON,TENN.,DECEMBER 17th--Mrs.Phoebe WALLACE,85,was found in
her room burned to death to day at her home near here.There was no one in the room at
the time,and it is supposed her clothes ignited or the mantel caught fire and she tried to
put it out.She was the widow of John H.WALLACE and is survived by the following
children:William,J.L.& J.R.WALLACE and Mrs.Will GIBSON,all of Earle,Ark.,and
Mrs.S.S.GLEASON,with whom she made her home.She was the aunt of
Mrs.S.S.FEATHERSTONE of Humboldt.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Prof.W.E.MONTGOMERY of
Henderson is the guest of his sister,Mrs.Herman CONYERS.
--Mrs.MAXEDON had as her guest last week her father,Rev.Tom RIDDICK,of Martin.
--BORN to Mr.& mrs.Ney KELLY of Jackson on December 18th,a son.
--Mrs.Blanche EDWARDS and son of Bells spent last Tuesday with her brother,Clarence
TUCKER.
--Mr.& Mrs.Walter WOOLEY and sons of Memphis will spend the holidays with their
mother,Mrs.Tom WARREN.
--News reached here Sunday of the death of Prof.R.J.HAYS which occurred at his home
near Jackson.He had made this place home for several years and had many friends here.He
is survived by his wife;children,Mrs.Geo.ROBERTS of Jackson;Mrs.Annie MAYS of
Memphis and Robert HAYS of Jackson.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON(held over from last week)--John BASS,son of
Mrs.Nannie BASS and Miss Mary ATCHISON,daughter of S.J.ATCHISON drove to the
M.E.parsonage Sunday afternoon and were married.
--Mr.& Mrs.J.J.SIRES were called to the bedside of his brother,Jordon SIRES,who is
very sick,last Saturday.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--The Misses DUNGAN of Humboldt,were
weekend guests of their uncle,Walter PATTERSON and wife.
--Miss Agatha BOALS and little brother,Bernard,are visiting their sister,Mrs.Edgar
PATTERSON in Memphis.
--Mrs.Tinder WELCH has as her guests her sister,Miss Rosa THAXTER and
brother,Mr.THAXTER of KY.
-- The friends of R.S.MATTHEWS will be pained to learn that he is declining rapidly,in
consequence of a cancer on his face.He is with his son,Bob Lee MATTHEWS,in Madison
County.
--On December 12th,in Memphis,at the home of her only survivimg
daughter,Mrs.B.S.HUMPREYS,the spirit of Mrs.Mary HUMPREYS passed into the
great beyond,she having passed the 86th milestone.She was the widow of
W.G.HUMPHREYS,step-mother to Esq.L.E.HUMPHREYS.This place was her home
before going to Memphis.Living here are two of her grandsons,Tinder WELCH and
Bennett WELCH,and a great grandson,John D.WELCH.Bennett WELCH attended his
grandmother’s funeral at Memphis last Monday.
FROM SANDERS’BLUFF--Arthur BLAKELY & Clara DUKE were married last
Sunday,December 19th.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Wade CRAIG of Clarksdale,Miss.,is
here visiting his father,Dr.J.R.CRAIG.
--Henry S.RUSSELL of Memphis will spend the holidays with his parents,Mr.&
Mrs.J.F.RUSSELL.
DEATH.MILAN,TENN.DECEMBER 17th--Walter HAMMON died at his home east of
here of malaria.He was a son of William HAMMON.He is survived by his parents;several
brothers and sisters.Services were held and burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery,east
of Milan.
DEATH.MILAN,TENN.December 17th-Irvin LOWRANCE,45,dropped dead from heart
failure at his home Wednesday morning.He was a farmer,residing five miles from here
survived by wife and children.Burial in Pisgah Cemetery on Thursday.

Cemetery.

--Mrs.Mattie JAMES is spending the early part of the new year with her
daughter,Mrs.John CARR at Birmingham,Ala.
--Mrs.J.B.OSTEEN has returned to Idlewild,after spending the holidays with her
father,W.T.HATLEY and family.

DEATH--Maurice MORPHIS died at the tubercular hospital in Davidson County,near
Nashville,on Friday,Dec.24th.The remaines were brought to Humboldt on Sunday
following Christmas day and interred in the Rose Hill Cemetery.He was reared in
Humboldt and was about 26 years of age.He is survived by one sister,Mrs.Milton
SIMMONS,of Macon,Georgia.Services were conducted at the home of Mr.&
Mrs.E.W.HAWKS.
DEATH--A.L.”Fate” PATTERSON died at his home just west of Humboldt,Tuesday,8
a.m.,after a short illness of pneumonia.He is survived by his wife;four sons;and four
daughters.He was 61 years of age.Services were conducted at the residence
Wednesday,burial in Salem churchyard.

--Levin JAMES,of Ft.Worth,Texas,spent the holidays with homefolks,and was here for
the Golden Wedding Anniversary of his parents,Mr.& Mrs.John JAMES,Sr.,on
Dec.22nd.They were married December 22,1870,she the former Miss Louise
CHERRY.Unto them 11 children were born.One girl died in childhood.Living are 6 girls
and 4 boys;26 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildre,

Belle SCOTT,of Texarkana,Texas and Robert Wade PRESTON,of Okla.City,Okla.Miss
SCOTT had been on an extended visit to her brother,Marshall Northcutt SCOTT at
Houston,Texas and the wedding was in the parlors of the First Methodist Church on
December 29,1920.She has made frequent visits here to the home of her aunt,Mrs.Albert
DAWSON.
--A simple yet beautiful wedding was solmnized at the parsonage of the First Christian
Church on December 25th at 7:30 p.m.when Rev.HOPE pronounced the words uniting
the lives of William FAULKNER and Lessie Mai JOHNSON. She is the daughter of Mr.&
Mrs.J.W.JOHNSON of this city.

RIPLEY,TENN.,JAN.7th-DEATH--Mrs.Margaret A.McCALLUM.aged 77 years,died at
her home in this city yesterday afternoon,after a long illness.Services at the Presbyterian
Church,Ripley,burial in Maplewood Cemetery.She is survived by 6 children;Walter &
Edward McCALLUM,both of Memphis;J.S.McCALLUM,of Humboldt; Richard
McCALLUM, Miss Margaret McCALLUM ans Mrs.H.W.TUCKER,all of Ripley.
DEATH--Mrs.Bettie HALE,widow of W.E.HALE;mother of John J.J.HALE and
Mrs.Rab.ROE;died at her home on Main Street in Humboldt,on last Friday,January
7th,1921,after a brief illness.After a service in the home,the remains were carried to Zion
Cemetery near Medina and laid to rest.She was 71 years old.
DIES IN MEMPHIS--News reached Humboldt Thursday morning that Mr.Fred
COLLINS had died in the early morning at his home in that city.He was reared in Gibson
County,in Milan.

Salem Cemetery.He was reared in the Salem community and had resided there until a few
years since,when he cast his lot among the people of Humboldt.
--Mrs.T.M.RAINES has returned from a week’s visit with her
daughter,Mrs.W.W.BEDWELL near Friendship,and has since been quite ill.

TIPTONVILLE,TENN.,JAN.10th--George H.SIMPSON,captain,who’s home is in
Toronto,Canada and Carl FISHER,pilot,who’s home is Dayton,Ohio;of a hydro-airplane
making a trip fron Cincinnati to Memphis,are beleived to have drowned when a
plane,believed to be theirs fell into the Mississippi River late yesterday.Negro laborers
reported an explosion and a flaming plane fell into the river.
KNOXVILLE,TENN.,JAN.9th--Despite a steady downpour of rain,a crowd of about
1500 to 2000 people attended the services and burial of the body of the late Senator
J.Parks WORLEY at the Bluff City.
KNOXVILLE,Tenn.,Jan.8th--Mrs.Carrie HIGGINS,age 70,her daughter,Mrs.Addie
FARMER,aged 38,and two grandchildren,Rea-y & Sallie FARMER,aged 8 & 7
years,were burned to death early this morning in their home near Rogersville.The fire was
discovered by Mrs.FARMER,who roused her husband and told him to rescue their
crippled child first,while she carried out two other children.Rushing back into the house to
get the two remaining children and was hemmed in by the flames and was burned to death
with her mother,despite desperate efforts of her husband and neighbors to rescue them.
JACKSON,TENN.JAN.10th.DEATH--Miss Corinna A.McCORRY,prominent in
U.D.C.Circles of the state and for a number of years society editor of the Jackson
Sun,died at her home here this afternoon.She was born in this city April 20,1850 and had
been a lifelong resident.She was a member of the Catholic Church,a sister of the late Judge
Henry W.McCORRY,Mrs.Mary FREEMAN,of Memphis and Judge Thos.McCORRY of
Jackson is her nephew.
MASON,TENN.,JAN.10th--W.A.DUNNAGAN,a young farmer of near West,south of
here and Miss Ruth McDOUGAL,daughter of Moss McDOUGAL of near Medina,were
married Sunday at the home of the bride’s parents.Rev.J.E.HICKS,of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church,perforning the ceremony.
MILAN,TENN.,JAN.10th--John WOMACK,farmer and stockman,and Mrs.Eunice
McNEAL,of near Walnut Grove,drove to the home of Squire FISHER of the 22nd
District of Gibson County and were married by that official.
ALAMO,TENN.,JAN.10th--Cards are out announcing the engagement of Nathan LEVIS
of this city to Miss Gladys SHAPERO,of Syracuse,NY.The wedding will occur on Sunday
evening,January 16th in NY.Mr.LEVIS is one of Alamo’s best dry goods merchant.
MILAN,TENN.,JAN.10th--Thomas PHELAN,a properous farmer,and Mrs.Willie
WILLIAMS were married at the home of the bride,Rev.POWELL of Trenton officiating.
MEMPHIS,TENN.,JAN.10th--Michael W.CONNELLY,aged 68,member of the editorial
staff of the News-Scimitar,died here early Sunday at his home.He came to Memphis in
1880 and has been connected with various papers here since.He is survived by four sons
and one daughter.
DYERSBURG,TENN.,JAN.8th--J.R.KIRBY,a young stenographer of this city,took two
tablets of bichloride mercury to-day.He had been suffering from neuralgia,and it is alleged
he remarked it would be better if he were dead.He is in Dyersburg General Hospital and is
not expected to recover.His relatives in Memphis have been notified.
SOCIETY--Mr.& Mrs.Geo.D.BRANDENBURG received a message fron Chattanooga
announcing the death of his aunt,Mrs.A.T.HAINES ahich occurred on December 23rd.
--Mrs.B.F.JARRELL was called to Memphis Thursday on account of the death of her
cousin,Fred COLLINS.
--Mesdames Will HOLLY & Leon WILLIAMSON attended the funeral of their
aunt,Mrs.Elizabeth HALE on Saturday.
UNION GROVE--Mrs.Jesse COX of Coxville spent Sunday with her

DEATH--Mrs.Novella Hill PARSONS,widow of Dr.J.F.PARSONS,died at the home of
her daughter.
,Mrs.Una McMURRAY in Jackson,on Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock.She is survived
by two daughters,by her first husband,Mrs.Una McMILLIAN,of Jackson(NOTE the
difference in last name spelling of same daughter) and Mrs.Lon B.McCALEB of
Dyersburg.She also had one sister,Mrs.J.A.BAIRD of Union City,and one brother,Lee
HARRIS,of Humboldt.She was 59 years of age,reared in Humboldt.The remains were
brought to Humboldt Thursday morning and carried to the home of her brother,where
services were held,after which the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.

his mother,Mrs.Emma ROBINSON.
--Mrs.Clark HAYES died Friday night at her home in the 12th district.Services were
conducted at Eldad Church,burial in Church graveyard.
--The children and relatives of Mr.T.M.LANE are at his bedside this week on account of
his serious illness.
WILSON,ARK.,JAN.19th--Henry LOWERY,negro,slayer of O.T.CRAIG,prominent
planter of Nodona,and the latter’s daughter,Mrs.C.O.WILLIAMSON on December
25th,has been captured by police of Elpaso,Texas and will be returned here at
once.LOWERY also seriously wounded Hugh & Richard CRAIG,sons of
O.T.CRAIG.Richard is still lingering near death in a Memphis hospital.
DEATH--After an illness of many months,Mr.John T.BROWN,one of Humboldt’s old and
most beloved citizens,died at his home on Osborne Street Saturday afternoon about 4
o’clock.He was 75 years of age and is survived by his wife;sons,Will BROWN,whose
address at present is unknown; Jesse BROWN,of Clarksdale,Miss.,and John BROWN,of
Albany,Ala.; daughters,Mrs.R.P.KERR and Mra.W.T.COX,of Humboldt.Services were
held at the Methodist Church Sunday,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.He was a vetern of the
Civil War.
WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Mr.James Dunlap has returned to
Sharon,after a visit to his daughter,Mrs.Joe ROWLETT.
--Mr.Grady THORN,of Gibson,is visiting his sister,Mrs.J.H.FUTRELL.
MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARS--Sometime Saturday afternoon ,probably about 2
p.m.,Mr.Harris J.NELSON,manager of the Tennessee Hardware Company,and one of
Humboldt’s most popular business men and citizens,disappeared and his whereabouts are
still unknown.Mr.NELSON was last seen on the streets at 2 p.m.,soon after this hour he
was missed and general inquiry began for him.Later he was reported to have been seen
about the union passenger station,at about 12:30 o’clock.Sunday
morning,Mr.T.N.NELSON, father of the missing man,went to Memphis,under the
impression he may have gone to that city.Later Sunday morning,the family was informed
he had been seen on the M.& O.Railroad between Carroll Switch and Jackson,and that he
was afoot and walking toward Jackson.This report was given in by Mr.Mit STOKES.
Thursday afternoon,a telegram was received by Mr.T.M.NELSON,dated Louisville,KY
Jan.,20,1 p.m.,and signed H.J.NELSON,asking that $200.00 be wired to him at
Winchester,KY and saying,”I’m coming home.”Mr.T.N.NELSON left last night for
Winchester,hoping to find his son there.
SANDERS BLUFF ITEMS--We are sorry to hear of the death of Mr.Charlie
MITCHELL.
“TWARTED LOVE”--Henry HAWKINS,of Humboldt and Miss Willie May
GOOSEMAN,aged 16 years,of Bells,attempted to stage a runaway marriage during the
holidays.They went to Trenton with some friends to buy a “pair of license” but Ma
GOOSEMAN was made aware of their intentions and promptly stopped the proceedings
by calling on an officier to take charge of the couple.After a few words the wedding party
disintergrated.
DEATH-BELLS,TENN.,JAN.18th--The remains of Willis Y.HITER were brought here
last Thursday from LA,at which place he died.He was reared near Bells,and went to LA
several years ago,where he has been a successful teacher in one of the largest schools in
the state.He leaves a young wife,mother,two brothers and three sisters.The burial took
place in Bellvue Cemetery.
DEATH-BELLS,TENN.,JAN.18th--Mr.George W.TATUM,a well-known citizen of
Crockett County,died Monday night at his residence in Bells,at the age of 76 years.He
leaves his wife and a host of relatives and friends,burial in Bellvue Central.

called to Humboldt Saturday on account of the death of his step-father,Mr.John
T.BROWN.

the funeral services of their father,Mr.John T.BROWN on Sunday.
DAVIDSON CHAPEL--Mrs.KNOX,of Cades,is spending several days here at the
bedsidw of her daughter,Mrs.Will PATRICK.
--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Will PATRICK on January 9th,a girl.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Mrs.A.T.HORINE,whose death occurred a
few days since at Chattanooga,was for many years a resident of this place.Her
husband,A.T.HORINE,was the pioneer fruit grower and especially strawberry raiser,in
this section of country.
--Relatives of Hilliard DUNLAP have been notified of his death,which occurred recently
at his home in Okla.He was reared to young manhood near here.At the time of his
death,he was proprietor of a chain of twenty stores,the annual business of which amounted
to about one million dollars.He was a near relative of J.K.DUNLAP and

GRIGGS,of Mason’s Grove,was solemnized Tuesday evening in Jackson.She is the
daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.D.PORTER,he is a son of Esq.and Mrs. R.B.GRIGGS.
--A quiet wedding was solemnized Sunday afternoon at the rectory of the Sacred Heart
Church between Eva Cecilia RYAN,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Jno.RYAN of Brownsville and
Eddie Glasglow HOLLEY by Rev.Father C.REID.
--The Fort Wayne,Ind.News contained the following:”Miss Janie REYNOLDS,daughter
of Mr.& Mrs.R.N.REYNOLDS of S.Webster Street,Fort Wayne;and McLeary
BLAKEMORE,formerly of Humboldt,Tenn.,were married at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the
home of the parents of the bride. (McLeary is the son of Mrs.Callie BLAKEMORE and
the nephew of Mr.Wiley BLAKEMORE,of Humboldt.
--Mrs.T.A.NOONER,who has been visiting her father,Mr.T.Q.WARMATH and
sister,Mrs.Wilford J.THWEATT,left Tuesday for her home in Grenada,Miss.
--Mrs.Jennie ROBERTS and daughter,Miss Annie,attended the funeral of her
sister,Mrs.T.G.JOHNSON at Alamo.
--Mrs.B.H.WHITLEY,who has been here guest of her daughter,Mrs.E.B.JOHNSON left
Sunday for her home in Memphis.
--Mrs.W.H.McKNIGHT left Saturday for Ripley,where she will visit her
daughter,Mrs.W.W.CRAIG.

LOCAL NEWS--N.A.CRESAP,of Humboldt spent several days last week with his
daughter,Mrs.Solon HARRISON.
--Mrs.Robert GIDEON og Jackson is at the bedside of her mother,Mrs.Z.BIGGS,who has
been quite sick.
--Mrs.Russell PATTERSON entertained in honor of her daughter,Sarah’s 11th birthday
on last Saturday afternoon.
VISITS HOMEFOLKS--After an almost nation-wide search,with no clue as to his
whereabouts being obtained,and when family and friends were in despair,letters arrived
from Mr.Harris NELSON for wife and mother.He wrote from San Pedro,Calif.,saying he
was in that city and would write for his wife to join him as soon as he was settled.
COXVILLE ITEMS. R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Dr.R.J.WILLIAMS,after a
few weeks’visit with his daughter,Mrs.Ernest LEMOND at Gadsden,has returned home.
--Messrs.E.S.& J.M.COX were in Alamo visiting their uncles and aunts;Mr.& Mrs.Cal
SMOTHERS and Mr.& Mrs.J.R.FARROW,who have been in very poor health.
INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mr.Thomas M.LANE,78,died early Tuesday
morning at the home of his son-in-law,O.M.FLY,in this city.He leaves his
wife;children,R.H.LANE and Mrs.J.C.WOOD,of Jackson; Mrs.O.M.FLY and Mrs.Roy
MORGAN of Gibson; and Mrs.Will SHEARD,of Trenton.A sister and three brothers also
survive him.After services at the residence,the body was laid to rest in White Rose
Cemetery.
--Dr.J.H.ROZZELL was called to Hazel,KY,Thursday to attend the funeral of his
nephew,Renzo FRIZZELL,who was killed in an auto accident Monday at
Colliersville,Illinois.
--Mr.ALLISON,of Vardaman,Miss.,attended the funeral of his son-in-law,John
STAVELY,here Sunday.
--Mr.John STAVELY,about 35 years of age,died Saturday afternoon at his home two
miles north of Gibson.Services were held at Double Springs Sunday,burial in Double
Springs Cemetery.He leaves a wife,two small children.a sister and several brothers to
mourn his death.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mr.A.J.HAYS,of Mercer,was guest of
his brother,W.C.HAYES and family the weekend.
--Mrs.Jim FARROW and son,P.G.,were weekends guests of her sister,Mrs.Almyr CATES
at Brownsville.
--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Lee BRANDON on Sunday,Jan.16th,a son.
--Mrs.T.G.JOHNSON,wife of Green JOHNSON,mother of Annie ROONEY, Nebhut and
Hamlett JOHNSON, Mrs.J.E.McCLANAHAN and Mrs.J.B.EMISON,died at her home
on Main Street last Tuesday.She had lived in Alamo since her marriage to Dr.JOHNSON
some forty years ago.She was 64 years of age.Burial in Alamo Cemetery.
--Dr.M.READ was called to Memphis to the bedside of his little son,Charles Edward,who
with his mother,has been in a hospital,very ill of blood poison caused by a tooth.
--DAVIDSON CHAPEL--James,little son of Mr.& Mrs.Jabe DAVIDSON,is very low
with diphteria.
--Mr.& Mrs.Billie DAVIDSON,of Laneview,spent Monday at the bedside of their little
grandson,James DAVIDSON.
IN MEMORIAM--Mrs.A.T.HORINE,Sr.,of Chattanooga,Tennessee at 11:30
p.m.Thursday morning,December 23,1920,found the pearly gates ajar at the portals of
Heaven,and she entered therein,leaving many sorrowing friends and relatives to mourn
their loss.Two sons,Victor C.HORINE,of El Centro,Calif.,and Alonza T.HORINE,of
Detroit,Mich.;two daughters,Misses Lillian & Beatrice HORINE,of Chattanooga; a
brother,Judge D.B.D.SMELTZER,of Iola,Kansas,also M.F.H.SMELTZER of Van
Buren,Ark.;two sisters,Mrs.Ellen M.SANNER,of Middleton,Maryland and Mrs.Amanda
S.KISSELL of Heagerstown,Maryland,all survive her.She had been confned to her home
for a number of years with acute Bright’s disease.Mr.& mrs.HORINE lived for years near
Gadsden,moved to Virginia 26 years ago,then to Chattanooga where Mr.HORINE died of
paralysis 19 years ago.She was laid to rest beside him in beautiful Forest Hill
Cemetery--Her Loving Neice;Mrs.Geo.D.BRANDENBURG.
ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Miss Ruth JAMES of Bells,spent the
weekend with her parents,Dr.& Mrs.F.C.JAMES.
--Mrs.Bettie THRONBERRY,of Wartrace is visiting her Brother,R.K.STEVENS,and
other relatives.
--Tom RICHARDSON of near Center Church, died last Tuesday. He leaves his wife and
several sons.
