Newton Sorrell

James Newton "Newtie" Sorrell died Saturday morning, January 12, 1974 at 1:25 o'clock at the Nursing Home, Covington, Tennessee.

He was 88 years old on Jan. 4.

Mr. Sorrell was a retired farmer and Dyer County land owner, having lived in the Sorrell's Chapel Community, 7 miles southeast of Dyersburg, until ill health caused him to leave his home in April 1969.

Mr. Sorrell was a member of the Fowlkes Methodist Church.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 1974 at 2 o'clock at the Friendship Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shelby Thompson of Dyer officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery at Dyersburg with Friendship Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were Thomas, Theron and Paul Yarbrough and Floyd N. Smith, grandsons, and Chester and Junior Sorrell.

He is survived by two daughters, Pauline Yarbrough of Fowlkes, and Irene Smith of Memphis; three sons, Melvin Sorrell and Aaron Sorrell of Springfield, Tenn.. and Paschal Sorrell of near Covington; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grand-children; 2 stepsons, Cloyse Freeman of Memphis and Charles Freeman of Millington; one stepdaughter, Lawanda Albright of Thebaddux, La., and 6 step-grandchildren.
