Cornelius P. Gilman Feb. 10, 1842 to 1923

Confederate Veteran answers last coll

C.P. Gilman, one of the best loved and respected sons of the old south passed away Sunday morning as a result of an injury received when he was knocked over by a horse. He was 82 years of age, having been born Feb 19, 1842, in Caroline county, Virginia. When he was still a child he moved with his parents to Richmond, and from there to Tennessee in 1871.

Mr. Gilman joined the Baptist Church when a young man and led a devout and Christian life. He was married Jan. 28, 1866, to Miss Sophia Letitia Houston, and nine children were born to this union, four of whom survive. He is survived by his wife, one son, B.J. Gilman, of Unionville, and three daughters, Mrs. H. R. Rike and Mrs. Henderson Baker of Dyersburg and Mrs. R.W Wagster, of Unionville. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gilman was a Confederate soldier, having fought during the Civil War under Robert E. Lee, and was a member of Company A, 10th Va. Battalion, Northern Virginia Army. While he was a man of mature years he was active, taking much interest in the affairs of his community and his Church, and always present at the Confederate reunion when possible.--- State Gazett, Dyersburg, Tenn._________

Mr. Gilman was a brother in law of Mrs. John B. Hicks, of Delos, Caroline county.
