Mrs. Fannie L. Matthews,
Gadsden, Tenn.

Dear Madam:

We find in your papers no proof of the date of your marriage. We must have that in all cases.

Moreover, we find you are assessed with 123 acres of land valued at $3750?. It does not seem to the Board that amount of property comes under the Indigency Clause of the Pension Law. We suggest that you send in proof of the actual value of the land, and your toal income from all sources.

Very respectfully,
By order of the Board,
[Not signed]
Secretary.

John P. Hickman, Secretary
Nashville Tenn. Dear Sir, received your letter the twenty fifth.

I cant understand why you did not get the date of marriage I have sent it. Will send it again. This will be three times now you want to know my income. I have none except the rent. I have one cow and thirteen hens that is all. the notary told me the place was still valued at $4000 well at that the taxes are so much higher, and labor is

Page 2
so high when all is paid there is not much left.

I had two friends to come and advise me to write to you, said they were sure I needed it too. I have three one hundred and twenty acres of land but it is so? worn out and run down and everything is so high when you buy and when you have something to sell it is so low it does not meet expenses. Will send the date of marriage again the magistrate told me it would be the best proof to send it from the office in the court house and that? is where I sent it from. Respectfully (not Fannie) Mrs. Nannie L. Matthews, Gadsden Tenn.

I appreciate Mr. Matthews getting the old solders pension but if I canot get it I am not going to complain if I dont get anything off the place.
