I, Newton Lemmens? Burrow a native of the State of Tennessee and now a citizen of Tennessee, resident at Maury City in the County of Crockett in said State of Tennessee, and who was a soldier from the State of Tennessee in the war between the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Tennessee, entitled "An Act for the benefit of indigent and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States, and to fix the fees of attorneys or agents for procuring such pension, and fixing a penalty for the violation of the same." And I do solemnly swear that I was a member of Capt. Ben T. Davis Co. 22nd Regt. (Inf.) Commanded by Col. T. J. Freeman in the service of the Confederate or United States, and that by reason of disability and indigence I am now entitled to receive the benefit of this Act. I further swear that I do not hold any National, State, or County office, nor do I receive aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, and that I am not an inmate of any soldier's home, and that I am unable to earn a reasonable support for myself and family. I do further solemnly swear that the answers given to the following questions are true:

Answer: Rutherford Co., Tenn, 28th day of July 1836
When did you enlist and in what command? Give the names of the regimental and company officers under whom you served.
Answer: Enlisted June 19th 1861, 22nd Tenn. T. J. Freeman Col. Capt. McMury? was the 1st Capt. after that Capt. Ben T. Davis, Tom Williams and John P. Fewell Lieuts.
In what battle or battles were you engaged, and, if not wounded, state what disabilities did you receive, if any?
Answer: (as written on application) Typhoid Fever, Sellia? in the right arm, said to be brought on from exposure in the army
What was the precise nature of your wound or disability, if any?
Answer: No wound, fever as above
Were you incapacitated for service by reason of said wound or disability incurred?
Answer: Yes, and for reason I was discharged
Were you discharged from the army by reason of said wound or disability?
Answer: Columbus, KY, entered service again and again discharged
If discharged from the army, where were you and what did you do until the close of the war?
Answer: Dr. Guinn while in the army and Dr. J. B. Powell after I came home
What was the name of the surgeon who attended you?
Answer: ______________
How did you get out of the army, when and where?
Answer: Discharge at Columbus, KY, and 2nd at Dym----?
Did you take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government?
Answer: Yes sir

Answer: Have been, not now

Answer: No wife - no property
How have you derived support for yourself and family for the past five years?
Answer: A little work on the farm - my daughter cares for me
Do you use intoxicants to any extent?
Answer: No sir, not a drop
How long have you been an actual resident of the State of Tennessee?
Answer: All my life
Have you an attorney to look after this application?
Answer: Yes sir

Personally appeared before me, J. W. Emison, Clerk of Co. Court of said County, the above named Newton L. Burrown, the applicant, with whom I am personally acquainted, and having the application read and fully explained to him, as well as the statements and answers therein made, made oath that the said statements and answers are true.

Personally appeared before me, J. W. Emison, Clerk of Co. Court of said County, the above named D. J. Conyers one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing application, and who is a physician of good standing, and being duly sworn says that he has carefully and thoroughly examined Newton L. Burrow, the applicant, and finds him laboring under the following disabilities:
Sciatica and in fact rheumatism almost over the entire body, double rupture, dislocated elbow with ankylosis hydrocele, dyspepsia and general debility.

Smith, two of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing application, with whom I am personally acquainted, and known to me to be citizens of veracity and standing in this community, and who make oath that they are personally acquainted with the foregoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made in this application are correct and true, to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in this claim, and that said applicant's habits are good and free from dishonor. Sir as to my 2 Discharge it was lost by me. I enlisted 2 time under Captain Newt? Anderson recruiting officer, served a short time, and was Discharged at Dyersburg, Tenn. Discharge by Bill Dawson. There is no living witnesses any where that I know of. After my Discharge 2 time I seen ---? soldiers by running blockade getting soldiers clothing which was risky. Also went to Biglie? Vill at to Little? Sal Shaw who died then near Columbia Tenn. He was a soldier in Army at that time. I am now 71 years old and have Rhumatism and not able to do manual labor have no one to take care of me or I would not apply for pension.

I Robert F. Smith Citizen of the County and State aforesaid, hereby state as follows. Viz:
That one Newton L. Burrow was in the Confederate Army with me in Co. K. 22nd Tenn. Inf. We were at time in the army of Tenn (Vol) then after about one month we were transfered to the Confederate army - Our first entrance into the army was in June 1861. Said Newton Burrow was with said Co. all the time until after the battle of Belmont, when said Burrow was discharged for disability. Our first Capt. was L. P. McMurry and he was followed by Ben T. Davis. Thomas J. Freeman was the Col. of the Regiment.
After that discharge this de---ant? Sixth? ---?

I, J. D. Agee of near Maury City, Tenn, Do make the following statement in regard to N. L. Burrows service in the Confederate Army. Was in Co. K. Reg 22 Tenn. Regt? Enlisted as State troop and served as such abt 40 days and received $14 from State of Tenn. Then transfered to Confederate service about July last 1861. Served until Dec. last 1861. Said N. L. Burrow was in said Company all the time to last of Dec. and was then Discharged on account of Disability. Our Captain was first L. P. McMurry and he was followed by Ben T. Davis and Thomas J. Freeman was Colonel of Regiment. I further Certify that I now [sic] the said N. L. Burrow the soldier was discharged on account of severe spell of Tyfoid fever at Columbus, Ky.
