Descendants of

Richard Worrell of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England

The following lineage chart is a result of thirty five years of researching the Worrell family. It is my mother's maiden name. My original research on this line covers Cheshire, England, Isle of Wight County, Virginia, Southampton, Virginia, Northampton, Craven, Dobbs, and Wayne Counties, in North Carolina and Gibson, Dyer, Obion, Carroll and Crockett Counties in West Tennessee. It has been interesting to note that many of the families the Worrells married into migrated with them from Isle of Wight County, Virginia to Wayne County, North Carolina, and then on to Tennessee. My database, naturally, continues the lineage to my family, but there are many of the family groups in North Carolina who have been given, as well.

The origin of the Worrell family is found in Cheshire, England where the Wirrall Peninsular, of that shire, juts out into the Irish Sea. It is believed that Norsemen from the Isle of Man founded the little group of villages that inhabited the Wirrall in it's early history. When William the Conqueror began the recording of the various landholdings in England, it was found that the system used on the Wirrall and surrounding area differed from the system used in other parts of England. The Wirrall, between the estuaries of the Mersey and Dee is 12 miles in width and 7 miles long.

Four children of my ancestors, Needham B. and Mary Alford Worrell, of Wayne County, North Carolina, migrated to Gibson County, Tennessee where their descendants are found in that county and the surrounding areas today. Needham B. Worrell is No. 17 on the following chart. Alfred Worrell was the first of his children to migrate and he is found in the marriage records of Gibson County, Tennessee marrying Harriet H. D. Crain, in 1837. I believe he migrated with William Alford and his family who are listed in the 1830 Census and 1830 Sheriff's List of Gibson County, Tennessee. William Alford was a relation and probably an uncle of Alfred. The Howells, Boytes, Runnels, Peacocks, Gardners, Bells, Tolars, Yorks, Edmondsons, Flowers, Griffins, Greens, Reasons, Popes, Mitchells, Pipkins, Iveys, Grants, and many others found in Gibson County, and it's surrounding counties, migrated from Wayne County, North Carolina.

This lineage chart is presented to those researchers who are interested in finding their roots. It, like all research, may have it's errors. There has been some input from others in the Wayne County, North Carolina genealogy, but the descendants of Needham B. Worrell has been my research except the information on James Harvey Worrell's and Mary Worrell Cates's families.

(Census, marriage, will, deed, cemetery, tax, grant, birth, social security and burial records have been used in compiling this lineage. Some information was gleaned from ancestorial records and GenForum discussions on the Internet. Prior to the advent of the computer, many hours were spent in the courthouses, libraries, and cemeteries of Tennessee gathering this material. )

1. Richard, born, c1600, in Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. He married unknown.

Notes on Richard Worrell

Two Wills were ordered from the Cheshire Record Office and Chester Diocesan Record Office, Duke Street, Chester, Cheshire, England. One was the Will of John Worrell who died, 1589, in Great Budworth, and the second was the Will of Richard Worrell, of Budworth, who died in 1611. I was unable to read either of the Wills since they were written in a rather archaic style. However, I believe both men are probably ancestors of Richard R. Worrell, the immigrant ancestor.

Children of Richard Worrall were as follows:

+ 2 i Richard2 Worrall, born, c1625, in Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. He married unknown.

Notes on Dorcas Runnals

As stated in Richard Worrell's Will, Dorcas Runnals was the daughter of Henry Runnals. Dorcas Runnals married the second time to John Bowin and is listed so in her father's will. John Bowen and Dorcas Runels (Reynolds) daughter of Henry Runels, 1725. (Marriages of Wight County, Virginia, p. 4) This name Runels was, also, spelled Runnals and Reynolds and varied throughout the family in the Isle of Wight and the descendants that migrated to other parts of the country. The earliest Reynolds to come to America was a Christopher Reynolds who is found in the early Jamestown records. No connection has been made to Christopher Reynolds, however a Christopher Reynolds witnessed three deeds by Roger Tarleton, one of which was also witnessed by Henry Reynolds of Isle of Wight. On 13 Nov 1717 Roger Tarleton sold 100 acres south of the Blackwater River to Henry Reynolds, weaver. This was signed by Henry Reynolds (his mark) and Christopher Reynolds (his mark). The Will of Henry Reynods is dated 11 February 1726 and proved on 28 Apr 1729. Legatees were his wife, Elizabeth; son, John; daughters, Patience, Dorcas Bowin (wife of John Bowin); Elizabeth Johnson; and son-in-law, John Weaid. Roger Tarleton was born in Chester, Cheshire, England leading one to speculate that Henry Runnals and Richard Worrell could have been acquainted with him before coming to America. Another interesting fact is that a Christopher and Nathaniel Reynolds are found in the early tax lists of Dobbs and Wayne Counties, North Carolina. A Christopher Reynolds, also, migrated to Gibson County, Tennessee.

Children of Richard R. Worrell and Dorcas Reynolds were as follows:

4 i William4 Worrell, born, c1694, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

+ 5 ii Richard4 Worrell, born, 1696, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He married unknown.

Notes for Sarah Boyet

The parents of Sarah Boyet has not been determined. There were Boytes in Isle of Wight County, and Wayne County, North Carolina who migrated to Gibson County, Tennessee. They were closely associated with Alfred Worrell's family.

Notes for James Worrell

28 Feb 1784, James Worrell signed a petition to place the county seat of Wayne County, North Carolina at a place called West Point on the Neuse River

James Worrel fought in the Revolutionary War at Moore's Creek Bridge. James Worrell was a member of Thomas Williams' Company of the Dobbs County Militia. This militia fought at the famous battle of Moore's Creek, February of 1776, in the prelude to the Revolutionary War. Moore's Creek is located in Pender County of North Carolina. This battlefield is now a national park maintained by the United States National Park Service. The Moore's Creek Bridge Campaign, viewed from a perspective of nearly 200 years assumes greater importance than in 1776. Had the loyalists reached the sea, it is not unreasonable to suppose that their ranks would have been swelled considerably by the Tories of the coastal areas. If a junction had been made with Governor Martin, and arms in sufficient number acquired, large numbers of loyalists and Regulators would have flocked to the royal standard. Time, terrain, the sea. Richard Caswell and James Moore cooperated to frustrate Tory hopes. One of the intangibles fell on the negative side. The success of the militia in this engagement so raised the appreciation of the occasional soldier that North Carolina consistently fell short of her quota of troops for the Continental Line throughout the remaining years of the American Revolution. Perhaps the most positive result of the victory was that it possibly played a significant role in North Carolina's decision, on April 12, 1776, to instruct her delegates in the Continental Congress "to concur with the delegates of the other colonies in declaring independency...." As early as April 5, Samuel Johnston had suggested this when he wrote from Halifax that "all our people here are up for Independence. (Excerpted from The North Carolina Continentals, by Hugh F. Rankin, The University of North Carolina Press, 1971)

(The following article is printed from Historic Wayne County, North Carolina under Early Wayne Buildings, 1975) On August 17, 1833, the court appropriated funds that the Wardens of the Poor could erect a "Poor House". Previously monies had been dispensed in many places to accomplish this end. This was obviously the first poor house in the county. Thomas Horn was Warden of the Poor and his committee was composed of some of the best known men in the county: Mark Pike, Waitman Thompson, Soloman Pope, Raiford Whitley, James F. Kornegay and Silas Cox, who acted as clerk. The wheels of government worked slowly even then. On August 20, 1834, the wardens had selected a site. Jonathan Pike, a prominent Quaker and brother of Nathan Pike for whom Pikeville was named, had been elected to head the committee and he, on their behalf, purchased from James and Isaac Worrel, "two hundred and ten acres of land situated in the neighborhood of Stoney Hill..." The price was $300 and provided for the support of James Worrel and his wife, during their natural lives.

Wayne County Will and Estate Records list James Worrell's estate probated in 1838. This would indicate that he died only five years after selling the above land to the county.

Notes for Mary (Polly) Alford

Confirmation has not been found that the first wife of Needham B. Worrell was an Alford but all circumstancial evidence points to the fact. The above deed tramsfer between Lodwick Alford, Jethro Thompson and wife, Pearcey Thompson, Needham Worrell and wife, Polly indicates the fact. I believe that Polly Worrell was the daughter of Lodwick Alford, Sr. Alfred Worrell, son of Needham Worrell, is the first Worrell to migrate to Gibson County, Tennessee. Records show that he was there by 1837 when he married Harriet Crain. It is possible that he migrated with the William Alford family who are found in the 1930 Sherriff's List of Gibson County with a male whose age matches that of Alfred Worrell. There are many Alfords living in Gibson and the surrounding areas today who are probably descendants of William Alford.
