If you ask folk in the area, they will tell you this is Sneads Community. Each community is famous
for something, trade, religion, school or a post office. This community was famous for Sneads
Picnic. From 1937 to 1943, the Snead brothers - Grady and Mace - conducted one of the biggest
affairs ever known in
Carroll Co. Tn. Every year they pitched a shindig of a picnic. It
featured good eats and good music, country music. It began at
sunup and lasted until sundown, usually the last day of July.
Performers came from far and near. Lots of local talent was
encouraged to perform by the Sneads. The Girls Harmony Four
of Paris, Sammy Ezell of Huntingdon, Stockard Twins of
McKenzie, Dick Martin and his String Band of McKenzie and
an outfit known as Dan and his twins of Henry performed.
Professionals stacked up against the locals such as Minnie Pearl
of Grinder's Switch, Whity Ford better known as the "Duke of
Paducah" and the famous Carter Family in 1943. Curley
Bradshaw and his famous harmonica, George Wilkerson and his
Fruit Jar Drinkers and the Daniel Quartet, Paul Howar and the
Arkansas Cottonpicker and those stars of Renfro Valley, Aunt
Idy, Uncle Juny and Little Clifford.
They counted 18,000 as one of the larger crowds. Sneads
Grove has been quiet for many years but the community created
by a picnic exists in the memory of those in attendance.
