Rowland Mills, Carroll County, Tennessee

Rowland Mills was started about 1833 by Lloyd Rowland. The mill was located on Sandy river south of Hollow Rock near Beuna Vista. About 1922 Wash Townsend ran a General Store and Center Point Baptist Church was nearby. L.K. McMakins told about riding a mule carrying a sack of meal ground at the old grist mill. His mother thought the water ground meal was better than the rest. The story was handed down by Etta Sellers Carnel how during the Civil War "bushwhackers" came to the Sellers home and prowled all night. One man slept on the porch and when daylight came, he took one of the Sellers daughters, dragged her by her hair over a large pine grove trying to make her tell where their money was. She never told, but it was buried in a snuff bottle behind the garden. Herdy Sellers, son of the immigrant died in 1900 and his house was bought by Henry Springer, his son in law. Sellers cemetery was given by John Sellers, Alex Brandon and Dr. Dud Laws.

The John Laws family lived between Dollar Hill and Sellers Hill and pulled cars up both. Midway on Sellers Hill in our pasture was a spring for the livestock and where mother did the family wash. in summer. Daddy found a special use for this spring. He devised a shower using his fruit tree spray pump. The piano box had holes in it for a nozzle made a nice shower. While one stood outside pumping water from the spring, another stood inside getting a very cold shower. Cousins always enjoyed their visit. Edith Laws Pendegrass
