Cherrywood is south of McKenzie between the Huntingdon/McKenzie RR and the Trezevant highway.  The first homestead was the Cherry family, Eli, Lawrence and Daniel. The first land deed was recorded before 1830.
The community was known as "Little Egypt" as the land was so productive for hay, corn and other grain.  New Bethel CP Church was built in the 1800's on the East side of the road near the present community center.  The building burned in 1910 after being struck by lightning.  Schools included the Negro school called Cherrywood and Turner's Academy on the east side of Cherrywood Road, across from the community center.  This building burned and was rebuilt and then moved to be used as a community center by the neighbors.  The Sunshine Home Demonstration Club was organized in 1930 with 32 members.  The Cherrywood Community Club was organized in 1951.  In early years there were two big social events annually, "Mitchell's Pond Picnic" and "Cherrywood Picnic."  Two outstanding landmarks were the Hannah house and the Snead place.
