Dear Sister I take the time to
write you a few lines to let you know I am well & well

we are in sight of the enemy can see them any time I heard today
that General Jackson had taken the City of Washington I can not
say for certain it is so but I hope it is true. I would like to
see you & the children but I have no chance to come to see
you brother Merida is sick at the hopsital in Richmond he
has bin at the hospital one week today we have seen hard times
for the last month about 4 days we had nothing but parched corn
to eat I hope we may not see no worse Our men had a little fight
with the Yankees on the 27 of this month the yankees took two
pieces of artillery from our men they rather got the best of the
fight ther two of our regt got cut up badly our men took 110
prisoners we are looking for a heavy fight soon we have a large
force here and so have the yankees if both armies were to meet
it will be a fight worth talking about tell Henry & Merida
